Five Tips For Preparing For A Stressful Speech
When you think of giving stressful speeches, teaching should come to mind
. Everyday a teacher stands vulnerable in front of a writhing group of loud, often times inattentive students, who are scrutinizing their instructors every move. It is a teachers job to rise above the noise, take control of the situation, and get a message across.
Good teachers are competent in delivering these messages while great teachers know how to engage their audience and deliver dynamic speeches. You can apply this same logic to be great in your own right.
Come to terms with what you know the experience is like and take comfort that what you are going to say is important. The stress of speaking comes from the anxiety of not being sure of how others will accept what you have to say or fearing that it will not come out perfectly.
In order to combat this anxiety and ease the stress of giving a speech, consider the following tips.
Be organized
Make an outline with topics and talking points of your speech on standard-sized paper. Note cards are too easily mixed up and interrupt the flow of words. Sometimes, even with good organization, plans are messed up. Having a backup, especially if incorporating technology, decreases anxiety and signals to the audience that you are prepared.
Know your audience
In all communication, targeting the group who you are speaking to is paramount. This helps when formulating the speech.
Be confident
Confidence is communicated from the minute you step in front of any group. It is conveyed in how you move when speaking, your mannerisms and tone of voice. Do not rock back and forth or fidget. The message is more believable from a person who commands attention.
Practice before hand
This is a delicate subject because too much practice leads to over-analyzation, which leads to indecision, all of which undermine your confidence. Know what works for you, but never wing it.
Act Natural
Easier said than done, but you should give a speech you would want to see and hear. Break the tension of the situation and in your body by deep breathing or a quick set of exercise if possible.
If your speech does not come out perfectly the first time, with experience you will become better in giving speeches and the less stress you will feel.
