Your credit rating can also be a deciding factor on whether or not you get approved for an apartment. You can get rid of bad credit and fix your credit on your own if you have the right information.
Fixing a credit report starts with ordering your report from the credit bureau. Credit bureaus will charge you a fee to send you a copy of your report. If you have been denied credit based on a report issued by a credit reporting agency, then you can get a free copy of your report from that agency within 60 days. Also, you are entitled to a free report annually from each of the three major credit reporting agencies.
When you receive your report, check it for accuracy. Examine each entry carefully. If you find incorrect or inaccurate information on the report be sure to write it down so that you can notify the credit bureau.
If there is information you want to dispute in the report, you should write to the credit bureau that sent you the report and tell them what you're disputing. State the reason why you're disputing it and then request an investigation and correction of all disputed items. It's very important that you send your letter by certified mail, return receipt requested. That way, you have proof that they received your letter and supporting documents. Be sure to keep copies of everything you sent.
By law, the credit reporting agency must investigate your dispute. If they cannot verify the disputed item, they must erase the item from your report. Also they must send you an updated copy of your report.
Once the incorrect item has been removed from your report, you can demand that the credit bureau send a corrected report to any company who has requested your report during the previous six months. If it was reviewed for employment purposes, they can send your updated report to all those who requested your report within the last two years.
If the investigation does not resolve your dispute, you have the right to add a 100-word statement to your file. All who request the report will see your side of the story. For example, if you had a valid argument with your credit card issuer over a charge, you can explain your version of the dispute.
