In women, experiencing vaginal odor can be fairly embarrassing and harassing. The condition can be chronic or acute. A smelly vagina does not always mean that there is a sexually transmitted disease but can be the outcome of poor hygiene. Using a mild soap, washing the vagina twice a day can eliminate vaginal odor. The unpleasant smell is caused by the growth of odor causing bacteria in the vagina, and killing them can help get rid of the smell. But if the odor still persists, this would be a sign that the condition should be a matter of concern.

If the infection of the vagina is left untreated for a long time, it can lead to an infection of the uterus and ovaries. Some women complain having vaginal odor within 24 hours after having sexual contact with another individual. The odor these women experience can be a result of having multiple sexual partners. Another cause would be a yeast infection which can be treated.

But a woman should be alarmed if the vaginal odor is an outcome of inflammation in the vagina which is one of the first symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases. STDs like gonorrhea, genital herpes, pelvic inflammatory disease and Chlamydia can cause consistent vaginal odor. If vaginal odor is accompanied by a discharge which is caused by viral infection, the symptoms should be taken very seriously. It is common for STDs to have symptoms of irritation in the part of the vagina where the vaginal odor comes from.

If the diagnosis of vagintis is delayed or even missed, it can result to vaginal odor. This condition can be prevented by avoiding sugar and garlic in the diet. But if the odor still persists, a woman should not think twice about visiting a doctor to discuss the matter. If the condition is left hidden or untreated for a long period of time, it can lead to uterine, cervical or vaginal cancer. It is also important to note that a misdiagnosis based on wrong information can worsen the STD.

Contraceptive devices like condoms or other foreign materials stuck for a long period in the vagina can also cause the unpleasant odor. In some cases, women who are more sensitive when it comes to smell can detect odor that will alarm them even if nothing is actually wrong. To avoid worries and further complications, it's best to consult a doctor.
