Four Essential Guidelines on Caring For Your Orchids

There's no "one size fits all" model when it comes to caring for orchids

. There are several different types of orchids. They have varying types of root structures and growth habits and come from a variety of climatic habitats so their requirements as for water, light, humidity and temperature can be quite different. It's not exceptionally hard to grow orchids but you do need to learn a little about the care requirements of the orchids you want to grow.

Like other plants, orchids will give you their best when their environmental and nutritional needs are met. That doesn't mean you cannot grow them successfully indoors. Many will grow beautifully indoors - if you are able to supply the correct levels of water, light, temperature and humidity.

Although the requirements of different types of orchids vary, some general information about orchid care may be enough to get you started on the correct path.

Temperature it's important to establish the required temperature range for the orchid variety you are growing. If you don't get this aspect right, your plants may not flower well. It's always a good idea to purchase orchid varieties that require temperature conditions close to the ranges that apply to your area. The alternative is taking steps to modify the temperature conditions that surround your orchids.

Humidity not to be confused with temperature. Humidity refers to amount of moisture being carried in the air. A high level of humidity is often associated with high temperatures but cold air can also contain a high level of moisture. Most orchids need a certain level of humidity to thrive and you can monitor the humidity by purchasing a hygrometer. If the area in which you are growing your orchids doesn't reach the required humidity levels you can purchase humidity trays to adjust the environment to suit them.

Light levels light contributes to an orchid's flowering process so if your orchid doesn't receive enough light for its needs, you might be waiting in vain to see those beautiful flowers. Similarly, if the light level is too intense, or your plants subjected to unnaturally long periods of light, their health may suffer. Exactly how much light your orchid requires will depend on the variety of orchid you have.

Water the majority of orchids don't like to be continually saturated. Many varieties have pseudobulbs that retain water and these varieties usually prefer to be just about dry before being watered again. Even varieties without this handy storage facility generally prefer not to receive additional water until they've soaked up most of the previous watering.

By far the best means of determining the specific levels of water, light, temperature and humidity that are best for your orchid, is to identify the orchid variety and find out its preferences. Monitoring your plant's health will also help you'll be able to make adjustments quickly if your orchid doesn't appear to be thriving. The pay off is that if you care for your orchid well, you're likely to be repaid with spectacular flowers.
