From Hand Assembly To Bookkeeping Three Suggestions For Small Business Outsourcing

Owning a small business brings a lot of benefits

, chief among which is that you are in control of your business from start to finish. The fewer employees you have, the more control you have over the entire process. However, the smaller the business is and the few employees you have, the more likely you are the one left doing all the work. From hand assembly and bindery services to human resource management and bookkeeping, many small businesses are receiving great benefits from outsourcing various aspects of their business.

Following are three tips for determining which tasks can be contracted out:

Define Your Core Business

Knowing what you are all about is the first step to take before outsourcing. Defining your core business isn't as difficult as it sounds. You probably started a business because you like to do something such as designing wedding invitations, planning and maintaining yard landscapes or creating quiet-time activity books for children during church or other meetings. Based on this idea, you figured you could make a profit at it. That is your core business.

Define Other Business Related Tasks

As you are well aware, simply doing the things you like is not all that is involved in running a business. There is a need for accounting, including accounts receivables, accounts payable, and bookkeeping. If your business generates a product, such as activity books, the books may need some hand assembly before they are ready to be distributed. If you have employees, there is a need for human resource management. All of these tasks take your attention away from your core business - away from the things you really enjoy doing that made your business thrive in the first place.

Determine What Can Be Outsourced

Once you have determined your core business and other tasks, the next step is to determine whether it would be profitable to outsource these tasks. One of the deciding factors is whether it would be more profitable to outsource or whether you should keep it in-house. For example, are you turning away orders because your packaging assembly line and hand assembly requirements are too slow to accept more orders? If so, you should outsource these tasks. If giving the work to others would mean that your own employees would not have enough to do, then perhaps the work should be kept in house.

As you consider which functions to contract with another company, you need to analyze all of the costs involved with having such things as bindery services or human resources management done for you. Because of the shift in work load, there may be excess employees or overtime pay for employees. Or, you may have to do other tasks yourself, thus taking valuable time away from your core business. Looking at all the factors will help you determine what you should give to a packaging assembly company and what tasks should be kept for your employees.
