Spears have been used for centuries in wartime and times of peace for both hunting and self defense. When looking at modern spears three styles typical come up: boar spear, assegai spear, and samburu spears. Each of these styles of spears is designed for different functions from hunting to quick penetration. Boar Spears

Boar spears are native to the European regions and hit their height of popularity during the Roman era. Modern boar spears are used for the same purpose as the ones in the roman times (minus the war efforts). Most modern boar hunting is done with a spear and the aid of hunting dogs. These spears are usually made with handles from either oak or ash and the short heavier weight makes them ideal for close quarter thrusting and stabbing. Assegai Spears

Samburu Spears

The samburu spear originates from northern Africa and is used by tribes for everything from hunting to branding tribal animals. Traditional samburu spears are made with a center wood handle and a metal butt end. Today's samburu spears still feature a metal butt end but in most cases the end is sharpened to a point. Handle materials for samburu's are either wood or a plastic composite material for added durability and balance. A samburu spear works great for hunting all types of animals like leopards and lions or any other fasting moving animals. A well balanced samburu is essential to an effective flight so be cautious of cheaper samburu spears because they might not be designed to throw extended distances.
