Fun Science Experiments For Kids To Do At Home

You can help your kids learn about the amazing world of science and have fun at the same time by doing science experiments at home

. The following easy experiments use everyday household items and recycled materials, don't take a lot of time, and are a great tool in teaching science for kids.

Experiment 1: White Light Spinner

Materials:

* A drinking glass

* White card stock

* Pencil

* Hole Punch

* Crayons or markers

Steps:

1. Place your card stock on a flat surface

2. Place your glass on top of the card stock

3. Use the pencil to trace around the bottom of the glass

4. Remove the glass and cut out the circle you just drew

5. Use the pencil to divide the circle into 3 pie-shaped sections that are about the same size

6. Color each section with the crayons or markers. Color one section blue, one red, and one green.

7. Use the hold punch to make a hole in the center of the circle.

8. Slide your pencil through the hole in the circle and SPIN!

Questions to ask children. (And the answers!)

* What color do you see? (White or Grey)

* Why do you see white/grey? (When the blue, red, and green spin so fast, the colors combine to form white/grey.)

More info and fun with colors:

White is a combination of all 7 colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet). Try making more circles with different colors. Spin them. What colors do you see?

Tips:

If you don't have card stock at home, don't worry! You can use the white side of an index or recipe card as well. Or even the blank white side of an old Christmas or birthday card! And in place of a drinking glass, you can use pretty much any circular can or jar anything that will give you a circle about 2-4 inches across the middle.

Experiment 2: Making Fake Snot

Materials:

* Boiling water

* A cup

* Gelatin

* 1/4 cup measuring cup

* Corn syrup

* A teaspoon

* A fork

Steps:

1. Fill the cup half-way with boiling water

2. Measure three teaspoons of gelatin and add them to the cup

3. Wait a few moments to allow the gelatin to soften and then stir your cup with a fork

4. Add 1/4 cup corn syrup to the cup and stir again with a fork

5. Observe your long strands of "snot" and discuss

Why?

Your mixture formed protein strands! They're sticky and stretchy like real snot. Real snot or mucus (as we adults like to call it) is made of protein strands and sugars too, just like what you just made.

Tips:

Try adding food coloring or using colored gelatin for different effects. For safety's sake, an adult should handle the boiling water.

Thousands of different experiments can help you teach science for kids, and once you get started, you're likely to even think up some of your own!
