Future King and Queen attacked during protest

The news story

9th December seen the actionplan about the rise of student tuition fees go ahead, despite the rebellion of several violent protests taken by outraged students and protesters.

The latestattack wason a car containingPrince Charles and his wife Camilla, momentsafter the plan was passed by MPs in Westminster Abbey, London. Paint was thrown at the car and window was cracked, thankfully the couple remained unharmed inside.

It was reported that 12 police officers and 43 protesters were injured during the riot.

With so many protests occurring across the whole country it would be easy to forget what they are protesting about. Over the past month thousands of university, school and college students have marched, protests and forced access on public buildings across the country angered by the high rise in fees (some more peaceful then others).

Recently elected governments Conservatives and Liberal Democrats announced in November 2010, that they would be planning to withdraw public funding from universities forcing universities to raise their tuition fees.

The average price that a university in England charge stands at 3290 a year. If the proposal goes ahead the government want to raise this to 6000 to 9000 a year by 2012-13, more than double the amount of what it is now. Some ministers believe that this is a fair and necessary plan.

The general public mainly students are outraged by this proposal and believe that the Liberal Democrats have gone against their word. During the election process (May 2010) the Liberal Democrats promised the public there would be no education cuts. Now it appears after gaining leadership alongside the Conservatives in England's first hung parliament in decades, that the Liberal Democrats have broken their promise.

Students fear the cuts will force future students to choose the cheapest courses not the ones best suited to them or simply not attempt to apply for university because of fear of being in too much debt.

The writer's point of view

As a student myself I fear this also, students are already in debt before leaving university with the introduced of fee rises I fear that many people will be put off higher education because of the fear their debt becoming uncontrollable. I worry for those who come from a low income background. The government have promised that universities will run scholarship programmes but I feel that students from low income backgrounds will lack enthusiasm and motivation to try out for these places because they may feel ashamed that they need to ask for help or because they may feel targeted against.
