Depression Depression is a word that covers a multitude of states
. What they have in common is a weary, flat attitude to life, which no longer feels worth living. There may be thoughts of suicide. The sufferer feels cut off from everyone else, feels a failure and is often impossible to reach emotionally, especially by family members, Deep depression is a serious and terrible state to be in, and the sufferer will need a lot of help and support to move out of it. It used to be thought that there were two types of depression, endogenous (caused by chemical change) and reactive (caused by events, life).
This no longer seems to be the predominant theory. Usually depression is due to complex psychological processor which need to be unravelled before a real cure can take place Remedies will often aid the recall of forgotten causal events. Women frequently suffer from transient depression related to shift of hormones. Some depression is undoubtedly caused poor nutrition. If the body is deprived of the vitamins it needs, especially the B range, then a woman can feel exhausted and depressed. The following remedies reflect some of the different ways in which depression can be expressed.
ARSENICUM
This is a restless sort of depression, depression in its agitated anxious, Obsessional form, the sufferer is full of self-reproach. Guilt is the predominant expression of the state. She thinks she has offended her friends and that they hate her. She is also frequently highly critical of others.
CIMICIFUGA
The woman feels as though a black cloud is hanging over her. She feels that people want to kill her, poison her. This severe depression is often associated with childbirth, when she may even wish the child harm. There may be sudden unpredictable bouts of depression.
LACHESIS
An intense depression often following loss, failure of an enterprise, personal rejection. It can also be associated with the menopause and with any time when there is loss of sexual libido.
NATRUM MUR
This covers a really deep depressive state, often too deep for the sufferer to acknowledge fully. She bottles up emotions and rejects sympathy because it is 'false* or embarrasses her. She prefers to be alone and avoids company.
NUX VOMICA
It is sometimes difficult to see the depression in this remedy because the subject is more inclined to anger and blame of others than of self. However, this behaviour is often a defence against self-blame and when it foils, the person can flip over into severe depression mixed with anger and indignation. The trigger for depression may be humiliation arising from the failure of some enterprise.
SEPIA
A very deeply depressed state is represented in this remedy. There is no interest in anything: family, friends, work, sexual activity. The woman just 'can't be bothered' with any of the things in which she would normally be highly involved and active. Whatever is suggested will be criticized. The depression is often precipitated by overwork and adrenal exhaustion. It may also follow viral infection
