Sport is a major player in bringing communities together in South Africa and encouraging people to be healthy and happy

. Promoting sport can be particularly tough in many third world countries where every day survival is the priority. Children are often needed to help on farms or in the running of the house and so have little time for being children. What free time they do have for play is often spent on dusty dirt roads with makeshift equipment mimicking their sporting heroes. It goes to show that sport gets everywhere and people of all ages are affected by it. By involving yourself in a coaching abroad project you can help give many children a route to a welcome distraction from daily hardship and maybe even help them realise a talent that may propel them into a different and exciting new world.

The benefits of getting children involved in physical activity are vast and need to be acknowledged. Coaching abroad projects are hugely important in delivering this message and providing an excellent opportunity for children, through schools or local clubs to get involved.

The aims of the projects

Coaching abroad projects primarily focus on offering inclusion in sport to all. On the sporting field everyone is equal, and particularly those children from disadvantaged backgrounds can feel empowered by their participation. Clinics are run throughout the school year and during the holidays too. This allows sessions to run at varying times and gives the maximum opportunity to all the children to attend at some time.

The sessions will be aimed at all ages and all abilities and will include a good variety of training drills and matches. Competitions and tournaments will also be arranged and children will have the chance to develop communication skills and feel a valuable part of a team. Self esteem among children who participate soars and as volunteers get more involved the childrens confidence grows. Inclusion in sport helps children further their experience of life.

Sessions are conducted in fun and informal environments to encourage friendships to be borne and talent to be explored. As a volunteer on a coaching abroad project you will be asked to keep a look out for particularly talented individuals who may continue to improve their skills and even become past of a regional or national sports team. Academies often access these projects in order to scout for the next sports stars. If it were not for these organised projects and all the willing volunteers much more talent would go unnoticed.

The success of the South African sports teams depends on spreading the opportunities for all to participate in sport. Funding is severely lacking and often focuses on the main sports such as football and rugby. There are, however, many other sports to get involved in, including netball and hockey. In a tough world sport is something that reaches out to everyone so why not get involved in coaching abroad and have a genuine chance to make a difference.
