The priority for any small business to get their listing in Google Places is naturally high
. Without it, youll have a tough time showing up on Google Maps and your competition will gladly take that top spot on Google Places. To make sure youre taking all the right steps, Google assembled some Quality Guidelines. Weve included a handful of them here to help get you started.
Ownership It probably goes without saying but naturally, only the business owners and/or authorized reps may verify a listing on Google. This helps prevent the competition from claiming and gaming and causing you no shortage of headaches.
Business Name Your brick and mortar business name should match its online persona. Keep it simple. Your listing in Google Places isnt the location to try to squeeze in clever advertising, a business description, or keywords. Save this stuff for the appropriate time and place.
Business Location Your Google
local business listings should be the actual location of your brick and mortar address. Be as precise as possible. Dont use a P.O. Box. Itll get removed. (Besides, even if it didnt, youd be sending customers to the Post Office and not the place where they can buy your wares. Nobody wants that.)
oDont create multiple accounts and try to have a separate listing in Google Places for your single business. (Theyre Google; theyll know.)
oDont add URLs or keywords to the address line. (Google seems to stress the no keywords where they dont belong philosophy so its probably advice worth heeding. )
Website & Phone When customers find your local business listing in Google places, make it easy for them to connect with you by providing a direct phone line. Call centers arent recommended. The same goes with the website. This isnt the proper location for affiliate referral URLs or landing pages.
Categories Focus on what your company is, not what it does. You may be tempted to tweak the Google local business listing to include localized keywords (e.g. pizza delivery in Chicago). Dont.
