Google Personalizing Search By Default - Something You Should Know If You Are Into Seo
Before we touch on personalized search, let me explain what SEO is about
. SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website from search engines via natural search results.
Typically, the higher or earlier your website appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engines.
On 4th December 2009, Google announced that it is expanding personalized search results. Google will start showing different search results for different users, depending on which links they have clicked the most in the past. In theory, this means that eventually, a jaguar car lover and a zoologist typing "jaguar" into the search field will end up with two different sets of search results. Why is this so?
Google will look at what you click on in search results and keep track of your search habit to determine your favorite sites. So if you are a book lover and always click on links from Amazon that appear in Google's results, over time, Google learns that you really like Amazon. Then, they will go ahead to give Amazon a huge ranking boost and you will start seeing more Amazon listings. On the other hand, if your friend always clicks on links from Barnes and Nobles that appear in Google's results, Google will give Barnes and Nobles a huge ranking boost in your friend's search results listing.
This should have a dramatic impact on search marketers and businesses who have invested in SEO as the days of "same results, all around" eventually come to an end.
So how personalized search affects SEO?
Although personalized search is beneficial to the users, businesses that have invested millions of dollars optimizing their websites for search may find themselves gradually shoved out of the top 10 listings. The emergence of personalized search also means that it will be harder for new websites to get into the top 10 listings. So does this mean SEO is dead? No. For many search queries, "normal" results will still be shown until Google gathers enough information to start personalizing them. So, you still need to optimize your website to ensure that you have got that first shot at being considered. And the same old best SEO tip still applies: Have outstanding content, attractive titles and descriptions to make a good impression in the eyes of both Google and users. You can enjoy the benefits of SEO even if you have a new website. Just follow the right SEO practice and you will be fine.
While people can opt-out of personalized results, I doubt many will do so. That also means SEOs shouldn't get distracted wondering about hacks to get normal results. Also, SEO firms cannot boast they can guarantee rankings anymore. SEO is never about guarantee rankings anyway. It is always about having good content, building legitimate back links consistently and increasing the conversion of your website.
Even with Google implementing personalized search, there is no need for you to panic. Continue to optimize your website using the right practice and you will still reap the reward of SEO.
