English is one of the most difficult languages to master.English is full of slang that varies by region,verb tenses that are hard to understand,and plurals that can fool even the most practiced writer. Thankfully, there are very handy tools to help increase your ability to write grammatical English. Spell checkers and grammar checkers are programs that automatically help you correct your mistakes. Some are 'free' and integrated within the software, and some arepurchased as a more powerful 3rd party tool. These programs are easily used with almost any program where text is entered.

A Few Tips to Improve Your Grammar:

Play video games with English subtitles

When dealing with daily tasks, use English words to describe items, people, places, things

Watch Television shows and films with English subtitles

Write down phrases or words that are confusing. Later, research these items to gain knowledge of their meanings.

Record yourself while talking in English and then play it back to yourself

Chat online with native English speakers

Use grammar and spell checking software to aid you in honing your grammatical skills. Do not just simply allow the computer to make the corrections for you. Seeing the incorrect placement of certain words in your sentences can show you how to you fix themand will allow you an opportunity to understandwhy you made the mistakes. If you notice yourself starting to make the same mistakes over again you will be able to soon recognize where you are going off-track and begin to correct your mistakes unconciously.

Using free software that comes bundled with most word processing software like Microsoft Word is usually adequate, but even updated versions of this software can have flaws that fail to correct grammar and spelling in some instances. This software is not totally perfect and unfortunately sometimes does miss mistakes that a native English speaker would easily notice. These gleaming errors can often have the effect of alienating readers.

The tool I have found the most effective for correcting errors is a 3rd party software program called Whitesmoke 2011. New editions of this program have been released every year. Whitesmoke alwayss catches more of my mistakes than regular Word used to. I can easily see where anyone learning English and trying to improve their skills would see a great benefit from using such a program. There is a free trial available the last time I looked. Also, as a plus, Whitesmoke includes integrated language translation and a multi-lingual dictionary.
