Gratitude the Good Attitude
You should be filled with gratitude for the simplest things in life
. Take for instance waking up in the morning and seeing that the bedside clock states that it is time to get up, be grateful that you can actually see with your eyes, many cannot.
When life is a little silly' and there are so many things happening and I feel that I am appearing to go backwards, I take a day out of my life to concentrate on what I usually take for granted.
I awake in the morning knowing that for the whole day I will be talking to myself! Does that mean that I need to be whisked off to the institute for the troubled? No it means that I am aware that I am being affected by the hurry and panic of life and not seeing what is right in front of me.
The practice goes like this.
I awake and am grateful that I can see, then step out of bed and notice those two wonderful friends that are at the end of my legs, my feet, and thank them for taking me along my path.
I duck into the shower hugely pleased that I have a shower and running water and then wash and sing, yes a good singer in the shower can always be found. I am then grateful that I have a voice to sing with.
Then I go to my wardrobe and am so thankful that I do not know what to wear due to having lots of clothes, more than one outfit for each day of the week is a good amount. There are people in the world who only have the clothes that they are wearing and nothing else.
It is time for breakfast, now what shall I have? I have a choice, does everyone in the world have a choice of what to eat or are there those who do not know where the next meal will come from?
Off to work I now go and perhaps I have a car, or maybe I take a bus or train but I do not have to walk 5 miles or kilometres to get to where I have my employment. Then of course I have somewhere to go where they pay me to work and at a sensible fee, not like many of the third world countries where the wages are so low we would laugh at them.
Every aspect of my life is recorded so that I can see how blessed I am with all the simple things of life. My shoes are comfortable, my clothes are perfect for the climate that I live in. I can buy my lunch and have a coffee without having to really think do I need it. Mind you that creamy cake is probably not necessary!
I return home from my work and open the door to my house and turn on the lights. Have you ever thought how nice it is that we just flick a switch and a light comes on? The telephone answer machine shows that friends have called and want to catch up with me; I am not alone and there are people who love me.
I put the dirty clothes in the washing machine and get it going knowing that later I can hang it all out to dry. I do not have to go down to the river and beat the clothes on a rock to clean the dirt away.
Then time for another shower perhaps and then to bed? I am so lucky that I have a lovely bed to climb into and nice clean sheets to sleep in, no not the ones in the machine but another set, yet again lucky hey!
When I follow this plan for one day I am filled with gratitude for the simplest and most useful things in my life, the ones that I have in the past forgotten to take notice of and have just taken for granted. I feel lucky to be alive to see that I am living, to live in the world and country that I have chosen and to be aware of all the wonderful machines and objects that make my life easy. Yet above all I am filled with gratitude that I can see, breathe, walk, talk and be part of this magical movement called life.
Don't take anything for granted but receive all with gratitude.
