Gravitational Potential Energy Calculator
A body in a specified position or deformed state is said to possess the potential energy
. In mechanics, the potential energy is mainly of two kinds. One is the gravitational potential energy and the other is elastic potential energy which is due to the change in the configuration of the body. The potential energy possessed by a body due to its position relative to the centre of the earth is called its gravitational potential energy. Larger the distance of the body from the centre of the earth, greater is its gravitational potential energy.
Gravitational Potential Energy
When a stone is lifted from the ground to a certain height, work is done against the force of gravity. This amount of work done is stored in the stone in the form of its gravitational potential energy. Due to this energy it acquires the capacity of doing work. The gravitational potential energy of a body at a height above the ground is measured by the amount of work done in lifting it up to that height against the force of gravity. Let a body of mass m be lifted from the ground (or earth surface) to a vertical height h. The least upwards force F required to lift the body (without acceleration) must be equal to the force of gravity, i.e., the weight of body mg acting vertically downwards. The work done on the body in lifting it to a height h is
W = force of gravity * displacement
W = mgh
This is stored in the form of the gravitational potential energy of the body.
Gravitational potential energy = mgh
Let us suppose that a body of mass 5kg if dropped down from a height of 10m above the ground, then the Gravitaional PE at the initial height is given by:PE = mgh= 5*10*9.8= 490 J (approx as per value of g)Check this how to solve math word problems awesome i recently used to see.Conclusion for the Gravitational Potential EnergyActually mgh is the gain in potential energy of the system of the body and the earth. It has been assumed here that when a body is on the earth its gravitational potential energy is zero. Thus, when a body is thrown vertically upwards, the height of the body from the ground increases. Hence its gravitational potential energy increases. Similarly when a body is dropped from a height, the height of the body from the ground decreases, hence its gravitational potential energy decreases.Potential Energy should be noticed when energy will be discussed.Energy is the ability to do the work OR it can also be defined as the generated power. Energy can be further divided into various different forms on the basis of their related forces:Potential EnergyKinetic EnergyThermal EnergyGravitational EnergySound EnergyLight EnergyElastic EnergyElectromagnetic EnergyThese above forms of energy can be easily converted into the other forms of energy without showing any loss, and hence follows the Law of Conservation of Energy. The unit of Potential Energy is Joules (J) or kilowatt or kilocalories. It is a defined as a scalar quantity.Examples of Potential Energy:is the energy by the virtue of its arrangement or location of parts of the body. In simple words we can easily determine that potential energy is the energy stored due to the postion on the body.potential imageThe above two examples shows the two different forms of Potential energy gravitational and elastic potential energy.One of the widely known Potential energy is Gravitational Potential Energy. This potential energy is the energy stored in an object as the result of its vertical position or height. In other words this gravitational energy is termed as the energy stored due to the gravitational traction of the earth on the object. Basically this type of potential energy depends entirely on the mass and height .Gravitation tatu imageFormula of Potential Energy:PE (gravitation) = Mass * g * HeightPE (gravitation)= m * g * hWhere m is the mass of the object , h is the height of the object and g will be the acceleration of gravity (9.8 m/s^2).In order to calculate the gravitational potential energy of any object , a zero height should be taken as a reference . The ground is always taken as the reference in calculating the potential energy.For example, a pendulum bob moves to and fro when measured above the table has gains potential energy which will be measured due to its height from the table as shown in the image below,ground table figureREFERENCE (ground or table)Conclusion on Potential Energy Formula:Overall, potential energy is the stored energy in an object due to its position with respect to some reference (normally ground).In all of its forms the energy stored in a system is termed as Potential energy. Potential energy is unable to perform work on its own. Potential energy can be changed to other forms of energy as energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can only be changed to other forms.by: mathqa
