The gorgeous sights of Switzerland often encourage people to think of it as a quaint, chocolate box kind of place; however a trip to Geneva will show you that the Alps have plenty to offer in terms of cosmopolitan chic. Geneva is perhaps best known for playing home to the UN's European Office, the International Red Cross, the World Health Organisation and a variety of other official bodies drawn to the city by it neutral status, but it's also an excellent place to spend a holiday. With so many different types of people settling in the city, you'll find a vibrant lively atmosphere waiting for you in Geneva.

However, it's not just the atmosphere that makes Geneva a popular choice for travellers; the city also boasts some truly spectacular view for itself. Located along the southern edges of Lake Geneva and with some majestic mountains creating a backdrop to remember, you can be sure that a stay in Geneva is a fantastic photo taking opportunity - especially when you take some of the city's fabulous architecture into account.

There are plenty of must see monuments and buildings gracing the streets of Geneva, including the famous Jet d'Eau - an amazing 140m high fountain of water. It is particularly nice at night, when it is beautifully lit, but it's an awe inspiring sight during the day too. The Cathdrale St-Pierre is well worth a visit too - there are plenty of guided tours available to offer some insight into the rich history of this place of worship, but the Cathedral and its towers can also be enjoyed purely for their aesthetic values.

If you prefer your sightseeing on the green side, you'll be glad to know that Geneva boasts a good variety of scenic parks and gardens. A particular highlight has to be the Parc des Bastions, a tree-lined park in the liberal arts campus of the University of Geneva that shows its artistic side with the help of sculptures such as a giant chess board and some imposing statues.

More rugged walks can be found at Bois de la Btie, a woodsy bluff that's still much undisturbed but with trails around the edges for visitors to enjoy the sights - you can also stop off at a small zoo at the edge of the woods for a chance to spot some wildlife. Choose your Geneva flights to coincide with the good weather, and you're sure to love exploring the Swiss city on foot.
