Footstools are one of the few things that people overlook when planning their new sofa set - but can make the difference between wanting to buy a recliner and still 'being able to put your feet up'.

Footstools and ottomans are little, low stools that you can rest your feet on. They normally co-ordinate with the sofa or armchair they 'belong' to and are designed to serve a variety of functions, from footstool to spare chair in an emergency (or for small children) to storage and support. Some chairs are designed to store them underneath, while others have no such space. What is always clear is that these stools are designed to serve a specific function in your seating area and can work well in a variety of situations.

Unique footstool types

There are, broadly, three types of footstool or ottoman. Introduced in the early 18th century, it is believed these pieces were adopted rapidly.

. The decorative footstool - one of the most used types of footstool that people have seen in the last few years is basically a footstool that matches your d?cor in some way. Many people argue that footstools should match their sofas and chairs, but some people opt for a 'fashion' statement of sorts and pick one that says something about them, or their choice of interior design. If you're not feeling that bold and buy one to match your sofas, you can either reupholster (or cover it in leather) a refurbished one, or you can just leave it as is.

The 'tuck away' - some footstools are designed to be 'tucked away' under chairs - these are ideal for chairs that are in a room with little space, but need that extra 'cosy' touch, such as conservatories or other small rooms. These footstools are often part of a coordinating range, and fit perfectly under chairs or other small spaces - some sets come with a 'storage/coffee' table where the footstools tuck away under.

. The storage footstool - footstools with built in storage are not a new idea, but have become more common recently. Mostly they're designed as hollow footstools, and can be used to store magazines, or other small items - which, again, is often a benefit if you've got little to no space to speak of. They work well as stools too as often, storage footstools are larger than regular ones, and come with the additional benefit of having space inside them to 'hide' things in.

Choosing the right stool type

One of the major reasons people choose their footstool is because they have an idea of what they'd like to use it for. If your sofa set is older or doesn't come with a footstool, then you may have to come up with some creative solutions, such as reupholstering a piece, or finding one that fits with your d?cor. Alternatively, you could pick one when you buy your next sofa set.
