Green Codes for UAE As Plans Unveiled for Zayed National Museum

The UAE is going green. Speaking at the EnviroCities 2010 conference in Dubai this week, Dr. Rashid Ahmad bin Fahd the Minister of Environment and Water announced plans to introduce the standards in the beginning of 2011.

One of the projects on the horizon is the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, Dubai. According to the statement by Foster + Partners, "Conceived as a monument and memorial to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE, the Museum will be the centrepiece of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District and will showcase the history, culture and more recently the social and economic transformation of the Emirates."

The museum will be located in Saddiyat Island, about 500 meters off the coast of Abu Dhabi, and will integrate efficient and modern elements with traditional Arabic design. In recognition of Sheikh Zayed's love of nature, the museum will feature a landscaped garden and tout sustainable features. The galleries will be located at the bases of five solar thermal towers, which will act as thermal chimneys and draw cool air into the museum.

The fresh air is captured at the lower levels and released into the library. The aerodynamic towers are made of lightweight steel and are shaped to resemble falcons, a bird that Sheikh Zayed admired. The design encourages natur al air flow as well as utilizes natural light.

In addition to gallery space, the museum will contain performance space and a large auditorium for presentations and films as well as traditional performances. The restaurant interior is inspired by Bedouin tents and allows access to a central courtyard.

"It has been a great privilege to work on the Zayed National Museum, to carry forward Sheikh Zayed's vision and to communicate the dynamic character of a contemporary United Arab Emirates," said Lord Foster in a statement. "We have sought to establish a building that will be an exemplar of sustainable design, resonating with Sheikh Zayed's love of nature and his wider heritage."
