The horrendous flood in SINDH Province has more or less disturbed human lives

Torhi Bund committed a breach flooded the extensive area of Sukkur, Kashmore- Kandhkot, Jacobabad and Shikarpur districts resulted unlimited devastation of many towns, thousands of villages and settlements, standing crops, basic infrastructure and which happened displacement of the tens of thousands poor people of affected districts. In the consequence people from Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur and Kandhkot, Jacobabad were put out of place the most up-to-date measurement of the flood situation. After submerging areas of northern Sindh (including Kashmore, Kandhkot, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur, and Dadu )the flood water changed its direction towards the concrete areas of southern Sindh Thatta, The Indus River breached an embankment at Surjani, leading to evacuations in Thatta district of Sindh Province. The three talukas of districts Thatta enormously have been flooded by water. Thousands of people have been moved out by HANDS and were sitting under the open sky. Several villages were also seen submerged by water. The Indus River flows through the town of Thatta and most of the settlements are on either side of the river, the towns of Sujawal, Bathoro and Daro also were overrun by floodwaters. HANDS weighed up the necessary requirements of these affected communities in the course of repaid assessment and HANDS also remained part of rapid Assessment by UNOCHA for 19 districts of Sindh during flood. From HANDS category point of view, HANDS is among 5th the largest national organization to conduct this assessment within 03 days. HANDS with group effort of district governments and local NGOs network planned rescue and relief work in flood affected districts. HANDS staff and volunteers rescued more than one lakh persons from the inundated areas and shifted to safer places. Declared emergency and shifted all staff of 1500 persons including Chief Executive, all General Managers and 12,000 volunteers in disaster response activities in 10 districts of Sindh and 01 district of Baluchistan. Established under guidance of Shiekh Tanveer Ahmed (Chief Executive HANDS ) and Mr. Zafar Ali Dehraj (General Manager Disaster) two Disaster Response Central Office at HANDS Regional Office one in northern Sindh in Sukkur, and other in southern Sindh at Thatta and declared 11 regional offices in Sindh and 01 office in Quetta-Baluchistan as Emergency Response Centers. HANDS Liaison office Islamabad was active in mobilization of national & international resources

HANDS mobilized in the flood emergency its staff of 150 persons & volunteers of 550 persons along with 20 vehicles to Kashmore, Kandhkot, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur, Dadu, Thatta and Jaferabad districts for evacuating the people from danger places to safe places.Many thousands people of flood affected area was shifted to the safe places by HANDS (community was not willing to evacuate) within two day. HANDS also engaged 03 Boats in Kashmore, Jacobabad and Thatta district for medical services to people between water, evacuation of people etc.

This is as fact as steel that scale of the flood disaster was unbelievable and somehow still not understood outside Pakistan. It is a slow-evolving, rapid on-set emergency.'The floods span the country unlike anything in decades. But the entire emergency in Sindh and Baluchistan was faced by HANDS courageously and team of HANDS burn mid night oil for providing every facilities to affected community of SINDH where as HANDS has established 109 relief camps in SINDH and BALOCHISTAN in which all basic facilities are being provided till now. Before establishing camps anti-mosquito spray was started in all area to control malaria and other diseases. In every camp all basic facilities are provided to flood affected people such as food, medicines and drinking water and the cooked and uncooked food by HANDS, in addition packets of ORS were also distributed among flood victims to protect children and elderly people from dehydration and gastroenteritis. HANDS has also planned establishment of many more relief camps and Tent cities within couple of days in different districts, till now shelter have been provided to 187905 displaced people of flood.

Out cooked and uncooked food being shared out by HANDS for affected people in the seven districts Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur, Kandhkot, Jacobabad, Matiari and Thatta provided cooked and uncooked food to 187905 peoples respectively, further HANDS started providing Food Ration of one month to 11,390 families in Sukkur, Shikarpur, Kashmore and Khairpur, Hyderabad, Matiari, Thatta & Quetta Districts.


For safe drinking water and sanitation HANDS provide water to all camps through water connections, water tankers, hand pump and tab water and clean water has been provided to 187905 people till now. As we know that Latrine facility is very important for these camp sites where a lot of peoples living in one shelter so from sanitation point of view 90 latrines have been constructed therefore HANDS has begun distributing kits containing essential items like buckets, soap, detergent, sanitary pads, and water purification tablets. In conjunction with these distributions, HANDS is training families on effective emergency hygiene practices to reduce the risk of water-borne. And WASH benefiting 32681 peoples in district Khairpur, Kashmore-Kandhkot, Sukkur and Thatta and Relief camps established by HANDS in the above districts.


HANDS treated just about 80862 OPD patients up to now through mobile camp and Fixed Medical Camp services for the flood affected people in order to make available the medical services to the sick, and injured including preventive vaccination for different viral, fungal, bacterial and other diseases. And also conducted health & hygiene sessions with the affected communities in the relief camps of Sukkur, Khairpur and Shikarpur districts. As we know that HANDS ever focus on education and health of poor people of Pakistan , so the first tent school opened up in Kashmore, Kandhkot, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur and Thatta districts school of affected district 90 per cent destroyed by the flood. The tent school is the first step towards rebuilding the educational system from scratch. It is thought that mostly schools were destroyed and hundreds of students were displaced. The few schools that are still standing have been declared dangerous and unusable. Similar tent schools are opening in other camps for displaced people in the region. HANDS and its donor partners are supplying learning materials such as school-in-a-box kits and school bags for students. In very camps of HANDS, schools have been opened not only schools have been opened in makeshift tent but also teachers have been hired so that those teachers can teach displaced students properly. And many distressed parents send their children to HANDS school for getting education the schools provide a place for children to learn and play further it has been noticed that class includes many small girls who are in the class for the first time.

According to international media Diarrheal disease is estimated to cause 2 million deaths in the developing world each year; the vast majority of these are among children younger than 2 years. Currently, 1 out of every 200 children who contract diarrhea will die of its consequences, including particularly dehydration. Almost all of these deaths could be prevented with the timely use of a simple and low-cost treatment for dehydration. so that is true that HANDS ever focus on health and education of poor people of Pakistan, for that cause whole staff of HANDS work hard round the clock so that qualitative health, and education facilities be provided to poor community of country. Similarly for flood affected people of district Kashmore DTC was established at Civil Hospital Kandhkot by HANDS with the collaboration of WHO team and Health Department. Cholera, as well as many other diarrheal diseases, is certainly increasing in the flood ravaged areas of Pakistan, An outbreak of diarrhea suspectedly caused by contaminated food HANDS DTC treated more than 173 flood victims of district Kashmir in current week. The organization provides free medicines services to the patients of diarrhea and other waterborne diseases besides providing purification tablets in the flood-hit area
