Hand Surgery: Different Types To Help You Feel Better

Getting surgery on the hands and extremities can be a daunting option

. Those parts of your body are so important to everyday tasks that some people might think they are better off untreated. However, leaving something untreated can cause many problems down the line. There are many different techniques involved in hand surgery and depending on your issue, you should be able to find one that will successfully help you.

Do your hands hurt constantly? Have you been diagnosed with a condition like carpal tunnel syndrome or rheumatoid arthritis? These things can make life incredibly hard to live from a personal perspective (cooking, cleaning, and gardening) to a business one (typing, building, filing). Being unable to complete your tasks because of pain can be very frustrating. This is typically where surgery comes in.

There are all kinds of procedures out there depending on the issue you are having with your extremities. First, your doctor will do a consultation to determine exactly what's wrong and to determine your general level of health. People who are obese or who smoke, among other things, are not always good candidates for surgery.

One of the most common things in hand dysfunction is a retracted tendon. This usually happens by way of injury, and it is when a tendon pulls away from where it should be.

The surgeon will make an incision, grab the tendon with forceps and pull it back to where it should be. He or she will then reattach it. For carpal tunnel syndrome, there are two options: surgical and endoscopic. In the surgical option, an incision is typically made from the palm of the hand to the wrist. This is to expose the tissue being affected. The doctor will go in and relieve the pressure there and stitch you back up. The endoscopic version is very similar, but without the incision.

If you are getting a birth deformity corrected, like a fused finger, the doctor will make an incision between the two fused fingers to separate them. Before this can happen the surgeon may have to do a skin graft or bone graft in order to ensure that your fingers look as normal as possible after the operation. You may also be required to do some physical therapy in order to regain all movement.

If you're having trouble with your hands, surgery may be a good option for you. It is extremely important to make sure that everything you do is done under a licensed practitioner who is able to answer any and all questions you may have. After diagnoses are made, you should be on your way to a successful operation that will bring you full range of motion and the ability to do everything you want and need to do.
