Being a leader means you need to know how to engage your employees as well. You have to pay attention to and make a personal connection with each individual. There are plenty of various ways to engage people and improve your leadership abilities here are some specific techniques for doing so:

1. Help your employees see that their work is valuable, that their individual contribution is part of a bigger picture. It's hard to feel a connection when you're working in a vacuum.

2. Be a good listener. There's just no replacement for personal interaction. Even the most motivated and competent individuals can lose energy, focus, and loyalty when their communication with their boss declines. As a leader, you have to take the time to talk to your employees in person during lunch or periodic one-on-one meetings. Asking how they're currently doing and if there's anything you can do to help shows that you're concerned about them.

3. Take a sincere interest in your employees. People will be more dedicated to their work when they know you're the type of leader who genuinely cares about their success. Seek out what each person is naturally good at and work with them to find ways they can make better use of their talents. Also, not every conversation has to be work-related. Your employees have lives outside of work, so take the time to learn about them beyond the office.

4. Give honest feedback. When someone is doing really well, reinforce it with positive comments, and their good performance will become even better. People need to be seen and recognized, and not just once a year in a usually short performance review. Your employees need to regularly hear what you honestly think of their work. If someone isn't meeting your expectations, tell them, too, so they have a chance to improve. Don't let your disappointments accumulate and fester. If there are regular discussions, then there won't be any surprises.

5. Get your employees involved. Use polls and surveys to ask for your employees' thoughts and ideas on certain topics. Make them fun and meaningful. Polls and surveys are great for boosting employee interaction and morale in the workplace.

In today's new economy, the need for engaging employees in the company's vision and mission has never been greater. The above mentioned methods provide a good starting point for the role that leaders must carry out.
