Nowadays the climate worldover is getting hotter day by day after that unexpected chill in the air recently
. It is not because God likes to see bikinis or that he does not want to promote woolens. Summer and winter are only fleeting images of the nature's unending motions. The distance between sun and the earth keeps changing during the course of yearly rotation and the change in the axis of the globe. But our hapless house is static; it would be really nice if our house could run to the shade of a tree in the summer. Since this is not possible or practical I will give you few simple cost effective solutions to make the days seem cooler.
Firstly it is essential to understand the principle of heat exchange. Energy flows in and out of our house through walls, roof, floor windows and other routes, and the human body need the temperature of 32C for thermal comfort.
Human thermal comfort can be defined as the state of mind which can express satisfaction with the thermal environment and this comfort can be influenced by air flow i.e. air drafts, cold floors, type of clothing's & so on.
Air movement influences body heat balance and hence, thermal comfort by effecting the rate of bodily cooling through evaporation of skin moisture. To achieve a proper thermal comfort the temperature of air around should be less than the skin temperature of 32 to 35C and if the temperature of air is more it will add heat to the body. Also both air speed and presence of humidity in the atmosphere govern the rate of evaporation of the skin moisture.
To create a new interior with a microclimate zone and to keep temperature around or below 35C there are some fundamental control options.
1) Minimizing admitting of external heat.
2) Promote ventilation and cooling by evaporation.
3) Maintaining cooler atmosphere in the house.
4) Removing heat energy present in the interior.
1) Minimizing admitting of external heat.
Mumbai is located on 17 N latitude i.e. in northern hemisphere and sun path is south east to south west, hence sun rays are always on southern wall making it the hottest wall in your house. Hence to minimize admitting external heat the following alternative can be adopted.
2) Promote ventilation and cooling by evaporation.
Windows located in North or east wall should be kept open to allow entry of air after 11 O'clock and ventilation of southern wall also to be kept open for the hot air to go out. A fan in the house will also help in cooling by evaporation.
3) Maintaining cooler atmosphere in the house.
The wall floor, ceiling and furniture of the house get cooler in the night by low temperature. It is advisable to preserve this for a longer time by not opening all windows and even if all windows are opened not to open all curtains, this will prevent loss of coolness of the room. In summer mop the house twice in the daytime this will cool the floor in the house in turn reducing the temperature.
4) Removing heat energy present in the interior.
When the air gets hot it rises, as its density reduces giving space to cooler air to replace it in the lower part of the room. So if possible push out hot air of the room with the help of an exhaust fan. If there is no provision to fix an exhaust fan then keep all the ventilators above the doors and windows open. This will help in removing heat from the interior.
So don't worry even if you cannot fix an air conditioner in your house, just wear light cotton clothes this summer for thermal comfort.
