Hidden in Plain sight Is what you are focusing on actually a reality

?

and if so, whose reality?

After looking at a slightly fussy world for the last two years, I finally bit the bullet last week and had an eye test. I am sitting here writing this in my shiny new glasses, but what does this have to do with the title of this article?

It has to do with something I witnessed while doing the eye test. As you can imagine, because I did need glasses there were letters on the test screen that I could not see very well, and some not at all. As the test progressed I noticed something fascinating; the eye being tested was trying to correct the letters in an effort to focus. It was like watching an old movie flickering on the screen, first the letter looked like an F and then a P and finally an E. Over and over again the letters disappeared and appeared again quickly as my eye tried to decide which letter was right.

Now obviously I became aware of what was going on because I saw it on the screen, but the entire process was happening completely subconsciously and I had no control over it, or the letters that were being chosen. Interestingly the letter turned out to be an H and not any of the letters my eye had been testing, so the process although fascinating in terms of how our brains work, was faulty.

At the time it was an interesting talking point to discuss with the guy doing the testing and he was able to confirm that what I had witnessed was normal, but this morning driving back from the gym, it hit me like a slap to the side of the head how often do we do this?

How often in life do we come across new situations, and in order to fit them into our lives in a way that makes sense to us, subconsciously test different scenarios that we feel comfortable with from our own internal toolbox before finally defining them in a way that works for us?

Doing this may develop and strengthen our own reality but we can also risk separating ourselves from what is actually true.

I then thought about coaching, and how it helps to change the way we look at the world. Coaching actually works a lot like glasses separating out and magnifying situations which may not be working for us, making it possible to look at them from many different angles, broadening our perspective and increasing the ability to sharpen our overall vision.

With all of this in mind, let me leave you with 3 questions to ponder:

Are you looking at the world through fussy lenses?

Would coaching help you to see your world from a different and wider perspective?

How would this help you?
