High School Yearbook Design and Preflighting

What does preflighting have to do with your High School Yearbook design? More than you may think.

Robin Kourakis, a teacher of art in her school and a member of the yearbook publishing advisory staff at Middleton High School situated in Middleton, Wisconsin had this to say about this checking process which what one would think has to do with aircraft:

Firstly, let's look at what designing a yearbook requires. It demands organization and a staff of dedicated volunteers made up of both teachers, students and often parents from the graphic arts trade as well. Following directions is very important and will help make the preflight process; which means the quality assurance check of the final digital book before sending to the print-shop - go more smoothly.

Photos of the right resolution, graphics with the correct font usage and other important factors such as color space, font sizes and page geometry need to all be set-up correctly within the page layout. The layout is done within a software application. Typically, many high schools also use professional layout tools, like Adobe InDesign or QuarkXPress. However many will also use Microsoft Publisher and even Word or online templates through third-party services.

Using a yearbook template to start with is of course a great idea. Yet, inevitably, someone will change things, use lo-res images which will print fuzzy or fonts which may look fine on screen but will not embed into the final print-PDF file and many other potential print problems. Working with your local printer is also a great tip to keep in mind.

Just because the graphic design looks sharp and fine on your computer monitor, does not mean it will print well. This is where the preflight process comes in. It is vitally important to check the layout throughout, as generally there will be more than one person working within the electronic book at this stage. Sticking to graphic design checklists and policy is important, but modern technology can also assist in making sure everyone is on the same page. "Some common printing problems that Kourakis runs into that could really affect and create big printing problems for yearbook publishing consist of wrong resolution, color profile, file format or missing fonts. With the book being loaded with pictures, these are printing problems that most certainly need to be corrected. "I love being able to re-check a file once it's been through the preflight process with Markzware FlightCheck after I've corrected the link. My students create layouts using Adobe InDesign. When they are finished and have packaged their file through InDesign, I use FlightCheck and then collect the file to my local computer off of the server.
