Home-based Business: Taper Candle Making
Taper candles are the most common candles that you see on dining tables or candelabras
. They provide a cozy and romantic atmosphere in the room. They also come in handy in the event of power outage. Thus, most homes keep their own supply of candles in preparation for such situations.
Candles marketability attracts the people who are into home-based business. Aside from that, the equipment and materials for candle making is readily available in craft shops and online candle supply shops.
Candle making is a profitable hobby that is fun and easy. However, it is time consuming. It is a rewarding activity for those who have little patience. You can make your own candles even with out any relevant experience in candle making.
You need to prepare the materials and equipment in your candle making. Wax, wick, thermometer, and dipping containers are needed to do this. With these materials at hand, you can now commence your candle making activity for your home-based business.
To start, you need to cut your wicks into your desired length. Remember that the wicks should be 4-6 inches longer than the candle that you would like to make. The wicks should be suitable to the candle that you are making. They should not be too wide for they will burn the candle wax faster and not too narrow for it will not burn well. You need to tie the end of the wicks to a stick. You will use this stick in dipping the wicks into the wax and in hanging them to dry.
When this is done, you can now start melting the wax. There are two choices in melting the wax. One is to use a double boiler over a sauce pan to melt the wax in constant heat; the other is to melt the wax over a container of hot water. Do not melt the wax directly onto the stove top because there is a risk of burning the wax which can cause fire. As the wax starts to melt, stir it gently to dissolve the lumps.
After melting the wax, dip the wicks you have prepared to the wax one by one. If you wan to add color or scent, you should do it this time. To make sure that the wax will not slip off the string, you need to set each candle aside when it already formed a thin layer. Then dip each candle again after you finished dipping the last candle. You need to continuously do the dipping until the candles reach your desired size. Patience is an important trait when you engage in this kind of home-based business.
Once this is done, let the candles dry by hanging them in the air on a drying rack. The candles should not touch the ground. You will know that they are done when they are hard to the touch.
Finally, cut the wicks on both ends of the candles. Leave a 1.2 cm wick at the thinner side of the taper. At the thicker side, cut the wicks to obtain a flat bottom. Remove all other wax formations that are not part of the candles. The candles are now ready to sell. Your home-based business is now on the roll.
