In terms of light fittings, it can help to place them under cabinets as this means the necessary areas are lit up. This can also be an inexpensive way to enhance the atmosphere of such rooms, she claimed.

"Also, under-cabinet lighting is available in several different shapes, sizes and installations, and is definitely do-able for the average do-it-yourselfer," she pointed out.

Meanwhile, she also advised consumers to consider adding dimmer switches to lights as these are not costly and they can help to extend the life span of bulbs and to conserve energy.

Making energy efficient adaptations to homes is a growing trend as the price of electricity and gas continues to increase and concerns about the environment rise on the political and social agenda.
