In Scotland the word clan refers to offspring or children which really mean that the members of a clan are like a family with a clan chief at the head

. There is a sense of belonging and loyalty among the members of Scottish clans that is unique.

The Scottish clans of the highlands and those in the lowlands are distinct. All Scottish clans live in the land that belonged to their ancestors. The members of a clan were actually an extended family and descendants of one person who was known to be the creator of the clan. The Scottish clans have a surname by which they are recognized. Many times all the people who are loyal to the clan are also considered to be clan members even though they are not related in blood.

All the queens subjects, civilians as well as official groups such as Guards, Pipers, Bands, Scouts etc. wear the house tartan of the Royal House. Similarly, other Scottish clans have their own house tartan which is unique and distinct for each of them. The Black Watch of Canada, also called the Royal Highland Regiment is an infantry regiment which has its own sett or house tartan called the Government tartan or the Black Watch tartan . The pipers of the Black Watch regiment has the right to wear the Royal Stewart tartan. Thus it can be said that the Black watch tartan is distinct from the house tartan of the Queen. Just like Black Watch Tartan, each regiment of the Queen also has its own house tartan.
