Housebreaking Your Puppy - Common Mistakes That Owners Make

If housebreaking your puppy is taking a lot longer that you expected, or not progressing well, you may be making one of the common mistakes that many owners make. Many owners have ideas reversed when they are trying to housebreak their puppy -- when the puppy has an accident, they tend to blame the puppy instead of themselves (even though they were the ones who let the puppy get into such a situation!). This type of thinking will only set back the training and cause problems. A puppy cannot be expected to hold his bladder for a long time. And he should certainly not be expected to somehow understand that he should not eliminate indoors. When you are housebreaking your puppy, that is exactly what you are trying to teach him.

One common mistake that many owners make is scolding their puppy when it is too late. "Too late" means anytime that you did not catch him in the act. Yelling at or scolding a puppy after the fact of the matter will only confuse him. In these situations, the best way to handle it is to simply clean up the mess without making a fuss. If you do catch him in the act, distract him with a loud clap or "No!" and quickly bring him outside while he's in the middle of eliminating. Then praise him immediately after he has done his business in the correct area.

One other thing that should be absolutely avoided when housebreaking your puppy is rubbing his nose in his mess. Not only is this cruel, it may cause him to develop a fear of eliminating in front of you. That spells trouble -- he will still eliminate in the house, but will try to hide while doing it. Even worse, he may eat his mess in fear of your reaction.

Housebreaking your puppy does not have to give you headaches if you go about it in a positive manner. Patience, timing and consistency are the keys to success. Lots of praise, rewards and an upbeat attitude also go a long way.
