How Can You Tip Movers?

Needless to say, when you hire professionals for your move

, you can delegate the entire task to them. Even if you take care of packing, lifting your belongings and carrying them to the moving truck and then transporting them safely is something they excel at. It is hard work and therefore they might expect an additional tip apart from their charges.

Is Tipping Compulsory?

Some companies have a no-tip policy and in this case it is not much of a problem as you dont have to offer anything. But others might expect you to pay a small percentage as a tip or service charge. This varies from company to company and there can never be a fixed amount designated as tips. Ask your company before the work starts if they have any policies regarding tips. You should steer clear from companies that ask customers to pay up a certain amount upfront as tips. Remember that tipping movers is not mandatory and is completely up to the customer to decide.

How to Distribute Tips?

Always tip the movers after the move when your items have been unloaded. You should inspect the items. After you made sure they are in perfect condition, you can decide on the tip. A 5% tip is quite reasonable, but that is up to you again. For standard moves, a crew of 2-4 movers is involved and you can ask them regarding the distribution of the tips, more so if a foreman is in charge. Ideally, the tips should be distributed equally because the foreman is paid more per hour anyway.

Good Service is a Must

You should tip movers only if you feel you have received good service from them. If you dont feel they have done justice to task at hand, then you are not obliged to pay anything. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind:

You can provide cold drinks, coffee or tea, or anything that is suitable according to the weather and time of day. If the move takes some time and extends over lunch, offer sandwiches or pizza something quick and easy to eat.

If the movers had to move heavy items like pianos, TV sets etc. or climb a lot of stairs, try to tip them a little more than usual.

If there are more than 2 movers, you should ideally give $20-$25 per person, although it is not a fixed rate.

If movers go beyond their jobs and help with last minute packing, by taking the time to doubly secure fragile items and making sure heavier items like pianos have been properly positioned on the truck, you can tip them much more.

Looking for movers? Go online and look for companies operating in the city you are moving to. For example, if you are going to Baltimore, search for Baltimore moving companies. If you are planning a shift to Arlington, then look for Arlington movers.
