How Companies Can Profit From Reducing Carbon Foot Print Without Spending Money and Saving Energy

Increase of Green house gases in the atmosphere is a result of inefficient methods used by companies in order to save few dollars. Kyoto protocol has set targets and time tables for the Industrialized nations that follow it to reduce GHG emissions.

As regulatory bodies in many countries are monitoring the effects of blatant misuse of nature, companies may find it quite difficult to survive with the old policies and methods. They need to find ways to reduce carbon footprint and show the results to the concerned authorities. Here is a simple yet effective way of doing it without spending any amount of money. Also there is no need of implementing any Carbon Footprint energy reduction solution sold for huge profits by many so called saviors of Universe.

First step is to set a yearly target. Break this down to quarterly targets. The top management must review the improvements quarterly.

Reduce the number of flights used for business travel. Instead use electric trains, cars and buses. Aeroplanes emit much more GHG than other modes of transport. As far as possible use video conferencing and virtual meetings.

Reduce the energy consumption at work by using energy efficient buildings, data centers, district heating etc. Use proper fuel mixture for vehicles used by the company.

Use better cooling system for the data centers. Cooling activity takes up a lot of energy. Use energy efficient hardware and virtualization technology.

Use thin provisioning that allows optimal allocation of storage space to servers on a just in time and just enough basis. Use De-duplication that compresses data by removing redundant data. Both these technologies help to minimize data storage space and number of servers needed.

Use both sides of the paper to print data instead of one side. When the net impact of this method over different offices is considered, it will become a sizeable reduction in carbon emission.

Use a good ERP to track the progress and find possibilities of reduction. SAP has recently come up with 'SAP Carbon Impact on Demand solution' which can be easily added to already existing SAP platform. It is specifically created for this sole purpose. It helps in reporting the progress to the concerned authorities very easy. SAP has already reduced Carbon emissions by 15 percent using this method and saved 90 Million Euros in 2009.

Educate the employees to turn off lights and A.C.'s, put systems in energy saving mode when not in use.

These were the few methods that can be implemented without adding further cost to the company.
