How Does Your Scuba Diving Technique Affect Your Dive Fun And The Fun Of Your Scuba Partner

How Does Your Scuba Diving Technique Affect Your Dive Fun And The Fun Of Your Scuba Partner

The scuba diver who wants to see many underwater creatures on each dive needs one technique. That scuba diver must move from place to place.

The scuba diver who carries a camera on the dive with the intention of getting some exceptional macro close range shots chooses one place on the reef. The macro picture taker often spends his entire scuba dive floating over that one place.

When you descend into the water with a bunch of adventurers you have an opportunity to watch various techniques as each scuba diver team swims its own direction.

Some adventurers are hyper, and bound around like meteors. Hurrying toward the next distracting spot of color, or new fish, they just spotted. Sometimes they see a turtle off in the distance and try to overtake it. Their dive method is a contest to find out who gets to see the most stuff. This technique normally means an early end to the dive because the scuba diver breathes faster, and blasts through the air quickly.

Some adventurers swim fast all over the coral. Not as quick as the hyper diver, but trying to see everything on one dive. In the act of moving quickly from place-to-place these adventurers miss most of the action that goes on in the coral. They also end up low on air, causing an early end to their scuba dive.

Other adventurers, not so much in a rush, calmly fin along the coral at a relaxed pace, seeing all of the fish and coral that the air in their tank permits. These adventurers see more fish activity. They enjoy a rich experience of colors as they dive along at an easy pace, observing the fish. Diving enthusiasts who use this technique of finning spend more time at depth because they inhale and exhale at a more relaxed pace, and their air goes farther.

Our last dive technique includes adventurers who find a busy spot of coral, and linger their entire underwater time, watching that one place. Adventurers in this bunch stay at depth longer. Generally floating above the coral, watching the colors and fish, they don't tire their muscles by swimming around. Less effort means easier breathing. Easier breathing means they dive longer. Observing one part of the coral their whole scuba dive rewards them with views of fish playing that most adventurers never see.

Photogs normally assume one of the final two techniques. Easier, or no, motion around the coral gives them those rare photo chances that make pictures suitable for front pages.

Don't forget that the technique you select impacts your scuba partner too. And your partner's technique impacts your diving. For the most dive fun find a buddy who's technique closely equals your own. When two adventurers dive along at the same speed neither scuba diver must end the experience early because one partner runs out of air too soon. Both diver's air consumption is nearly equal when their dive techniques are similar.

Your diving method is a matter of personal choice. No technique is necessarily right or wrong when it fits the scuba diver. Every diver should select the technique that allows the most comfort while diving.

Consider that other adventurers view your technique as a sign of your experience. The slower your scuba diving technique, the more expert you look.
