How Is A Local, Small Courier Different From Fedex?
When you're setting up a shipping operation for your company
, one of the most basic concerns that you're going to have to address is whether you want to do business with a large international courier like FedEx, or use a smaller local company instead. The truth is that there are many smaller 3pl providers that can do an excellent job of distributing your products. Deciding which type of company to use is going to be based mostly on how your own organization is structured.
If you're trying to build a shipping operation that is going to span the entire globe, and if you have hundreds or thousands of products leaving your plant every day, then a company like FedEx is obviously going to be the choice for you. The advantage that those large companies offer is one of reach, and of scale. They have the ability to ship anywhere in the world, and are among the largest companies on the globe, so can always adjust to meet your shipping needs no matter how great they may be.
The advantage to working with a smaller, more local company is that they are likely to take a much more hands on approach with your company. Rather than just being another client, these smaller companies tend to work with their customers, rather than simply for them. They are excellent at problem solving and helping people with smaller budgets and delivery needs figure out the best way to structure their shipping operation.
With the larger companies, it can also be much more difficult to negotiate anything. They may have lower prices on large shipments because they have the scale that allows them to offer that kind of pricing. However, they are unlikely to negotiate on a personal level. Smaller companies however want your business very much, and are willing to offer you things at times that will help to set them apart from their competition.
Deciding which kind of courier company is going to be best for your organization is just going to depend mostly on what kind of shipping you need to do. Large amounts of international shipping are only going to end up being sourced to a larger company if you use a small one anyway. On the other hand, if you're only shipping in a local area, there can be a lot to be gained by using a company that has put their entire focus on that area, rather than being more generalized.
