How To Answer Difficult Sales Recruitment Questions
There are always questions that you can expect and prepare for when you attend a sales recruitment interview
. Questions such as your strengths and weaknesses, why you are interesting in sales, about previous jobs you have held, and so on, are pretty much stock standard.
When confronted by a question totally out of left field, the key is to remain calm and composed, take a deep breath and pause to think of your answer before responding.
Here are some sample curly questions and tips on how to answer them:
* Are you not over qualified? The interviewer is wondering whether you are really going to be committed to the job you have applied for, and whether or not you are going to leave at the first opportunity, once a better job comes along.
The key to answering this question in your sales recruitment interview is to assure them that you have long term aspirations to be in sales for the long term, and are committed to your potential employer's organization. Indicate that your previous experience is an advantage that will result in instant return to the organization.
* Are you worth the salary I'm offering? - The trick to answering this question is to play up your previous successes in life. You need to qualify the value you will bring to the interviewer's organization. So talk about how you have increased sales and profitability in the past, or how you have achieved significant outcomes in projects or roles you have held previously.
* Tell me about a time when you had to work with someone you didn't respect - This is a very loaded sales recruitment question! Whatever you do, do not fall into the trap of passing personal judgment. The interviewer is fishing to see whether you will 'dump' on other people. When answering this question, keep your answer focused on yourself and not the other person, and how you managed to achieve outcomes despite your personal feelings.
* What is the worst thing a previous employer has said about you? - The interviewer is obviously fishing to uncover your weaknesses here. The best way to answer this sales recruitment question is to discuss an area or skill which was once a problem for you but you have overcome. The message you want to convey is that you are committed to striving to improve.
* What type of person would your friends say you where? - The interviewer is trying to gain some insight into the type of person you are and what kind of qualities you exemplify. Focus on personality characteristics that are likely to be considered strengths, particularly with regards to sales roles.
* What type of animal would you be and why? - This certainly takes the cake as far as strange interview questions go! Variations of this theme would be to ask what kind of car would you be, what kind of cereal, what kind of food, etc,
The trick to answering this question is to discuss the rationale behind your choice of animal, car, cereal, food and so on. With animals, would you be a lion in charge of a pride (indicating leadership) or would you be a more sociable animal such as a Meerkat (indicating teamwork)?
Clearly, interview questions come in all shapes and sizes when it comes to your sales recruitment interview. Just remain calm and expect the unexpected!
