How To Beat Depression
Depression is insidious
Depression is insidious. It feels like a deep pit you can't get out of. You feel unable to even try to get out. At least that is how I felt before I figured out three simple steps that set me free. My multiple decade journey out of depression included innumerable attempts with depression medication, which usually helped. But I felt depressed that I needed depression medication. LOL. I'd ask myself, "Why can't I just be normal?" Then I'd stop taking the medication until friends started hinting it may be time for a trip to the pharmacy. Or on occasion, I'd stop the medication because I'd start having side effects. The one thing I knew for sure was I'd never stay on medication so I prayed for another way out. I asked for Wisdom. Here are the first three steps that allowed me to start journeying out of the pit. The side effects are amazing! 1. The first thing that came to me was The JoyStream exercise. You can find the entire exercise at
The JoyStream The key point is to turn up the corners of your mouth. Yes, smile. I discovered that when we truly smile, even if it is the tiniest smile, our brains get quiet in a good way. I have even discovered I can play around with the size of the smile. If I am heading off to sleep, a big smile energizes me too much. The energy can come in handy when I am doing a project, but not so handy at bedtime. So at bedtime, I do the tiniest of smiles, speak my intentions for deep, peaceful sleep and that I wake up refreshed, renewed and energized. Not only does a smile feel good, it has wonderful side effects. I discovered that when I smile, my brain shuts off, even if for the tiniest second, and what lies behind this true simple quiet? Peace. I realized that peace was within me all along. Peace feels so much better than depression. The next side effect of a smile is the fact that our minds can't concentrate on two things at once. So when you turn up the corners of your mouth and access the peace within, you can't simultaneously worry, be stressed, anxious, or depressed. Those are my kind of side effects. Please take the time to do the rest of The JoyStream exercise because it teaches you how to create a good emotional memory benchmark that you can call on in time of need. When I felt I was slipping towards depression, I recalled my JoyStream memory and I immediately stopped the slide. 2. The key to overcoming depression is choosing a better feeling one moment at a time. For me I had to create this new habit. Once I knew I could feel better simply by turning up the corners of my mouth, I came up the Peaceful Face. I call it finding your Peaceful Face. This includes turning up the corners of your mouth along with allowing the muscles around your eyes to relax. Raise your eyebrows a tiny bit, imagine that your eyes are smiling and turn up the corners of your mouth. Doesn't this feel wonderful? As I began to make the Peaceful Face a habit, I'd be driving down the highway and notice that my face hurt. I realized I was anxious and my face was all scrunched up. In no time at all, the Peaceful Face was the norm. The Peaceful Face is a simple solution to overcoming stressful moments. Remember, you can turn up the corners of your mouth the tiniest bit so you can do it without provoking another person. A great side effect of the peaceful face is reduced wrinkles! It is the youngest face your can project to others and to yourself in the mirror. It also helps to reduce tension headaches because you are literally relaxing the tension in your face. 3. Once I was in the groove of feeling better, I knew it was time to deal with the constant stress, anxiety and worry that plagued my soul, heart and mind. Again, I asked for Wisdom. As it turned out my Dad called me that day. As usual he began his voice message with, "Ahhhh Sheila, All is Well." That little line, All is Well soothed me every time. I decided to incorporate the line into my journey out of depression. I struggled greatly with worry and anxiety. How could I know All is Well when I travel? Wisdom again answered with my creation of a travel affirmation, since being in a car, especially as a passenger, worried me terribly. The affirmation I created is "I intend for safety, joy and smooth sailing." I say it once when I get in the car and leave it at that. At times if I hit some crazy traffic, I repeat the affirmation. A great side effect of this is if you have a worried passenger in the car, let them know this wonderfully simple affirmation. You both get some peace. I also use the affirmation when I do any physical activities like hiking, snowshoeing, or home improvement projects. I am a firm believer in having affirmations memorized that affirm All is Well, or any other quality I am desiring. They are short and simple, so I have them in a pinch. One of my favorite all-time affirmations is by mile Cou. It is: "Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better." Sometimes I leave the affirmation as it is and sometimes I add something specific, like "Every day, in every way, my knees are getting better and better." If you enjoy affirmations please visit
The JoyStream These three simple steps completely changed my life. I feel so much better, without any drugs, and I am more productive, creative, free and energized. I literally
