Recently, we have seen a large shift in the style of policing in the UK; there is

now a much greater focus on community based policing and providing a reassuring presence on our streets. To this effect, we now see many PCSO officers roaming our streets and engaging in our community. PCSO stands for Police Community Support Officer and there are likely to be many more in the future. It's little wonder therefore that many people are considering becoming a PCSO.

Crimes that effect local people in a voluminous nature such as theft and antisocial behaviour are on the rise and becoming a PCSO is a good way to help tackle this growing problem. Such crimes aren't devastating but are still incredibly annoying and sometimes intimidating. For this reason it has hit the headlines on a number of occasions and the number of young people wandering the streets with little to do has worried many residents.

This crime outbreak has been significant enough to warrant the employment of specialised officers to tackle the problem. The job of a PCSO is to provide a police presence to assure residents and to deter criminals. There are many differences between the job of a PCSO and the job of a normal police officer so the role of a police community support officer may be more suitable to you. You may be suitable for becoming a PCSO even if you don't fancy becoming a regular Police officer.

PCSOs do not have the power of arrest to the same extent as a police officer and are generally not involved in solving major crimes. Their job is to serve the community, to which they are assigned, and to provide residents with an assurance when they may feel they lack from regular police officers. PCSOs are expected to be very disciplined, like any police officer, but often are not expected to deal with dangerous criminals. This may make becoming a PCSO a little bit more attractive to some people.

There are still many advantages to becoming a PCSO. The salary is very good and the pension arrangements aren't looking too bad either. There are many reasons why the job could seem attractive and the commute to work doesn't have to be particularly long either.

Becoming a PCSO will give you the opportunity to make a real difference to a community or even the community in which you live. For some people this can be exceptionally rewarding and positive. There are, of course, many criteria before you can slip on a hat and high visibility jacket. You have to display that you possess the skills necessary for becoming a PCSO and there are tests on general competence such as mathematics and spelling.

Becoming a PCSO could prove to be an exceptionally worthwhile experience if you are the right candidate and the benefits could come thick and fast. You will also receive the chance to make a positive impact upon the local community and the residents within it.
