? Are there certain requirements that need to be met before dealing with patients? It takes years of schooling and training to be able to perform an operation that can transform a person's life. Some look to become experts in a certain part of the industry while others perform a variety of different treatments.

High School

Many people begin to think about their future career options in high school. While a decision does not need to be made just yet, those interested in medical careers often begin to focus on their science classes and begin thinking about where they want to pursue their college education.

College (Bachelor's Degree)

In order to become a plastic surgeon, students usually get a bachelor's degree in science. While there are other majors that might be acceptable, science will definitely give students an edge. Most people spend about four years in college and strive to get good grades in order to be accepted into medical school. Before the end of the senior year, students should take the Medical Common Admission Test (MCAT). This test score will be required in order to get into medical school.

Medical School

It is in medical school that a student begins to consider a career as a plastic surgeon. The first two years tend to be general medical study. There are classes covering a variety of different subjects including anatomy and immunology. For the next two years, students are completing rotations in a variety of medical fields in order to get exposure to different opportunities. At this time, a student will make the decision to become a plastic surgeon and focus his or her efforts on achieving the goal.

Licensing and Residency

While in medical school, students begin to apply for licensing as a medical practitioner. From there, students begin their residency. This is the first real job after graduating from medical school. All of this training is done under a certified plastic surgeon. The student learns how to deal with patients, general professionalism, and patient care. Most residencies last somewhere between five and six years. When the residency is done, a person can begin to perform cosmetic surgery.

Certification

The final is applying for certification. An application needs to be submitted and once it is accepted, there is a written examination as well as an oral examination. Once this is complete, a person is ready to work in an already established practice and continue learning. At some point, many doctors open up with own practices and begin seeing patients by themselves.
