How To Construct Topic Sentences In Essays

Essay writing is all about writing what you can best think of

. When you write an essay, you organise your thoughts and prioritise them well according to the importance of ideas presented in the essay. You must build good topic sentences in your essay so that you can stress the important words and phrases which contains the thoughts of your essay.

There are four criteria that you must think of in judging your topic sentences:

"The topic sentences are brief

Not all topics or key ideas can be explained briefly. It is advantageous if your topic sentence is brief so that the ideas contained are clear and understandable.

"The topic sentence must be clear and strong

This means that you understand what the topic sentence exactly means and its role to the whole essay.

"There is a heavy stress on the key elements or ideas

The essay can become forceful when there are heavy words that add to the gravity of your thoughts and ideas.

"The sentence must stand clear at the beginning of the paragraph

This is a constant rule for topic sentences; when we say stand clear, it means that the topic sentences are highly noticeable as topic sentences. Topic sentences must be consistent with the focus and emphasis of the whole paragraph so that the essay can possess its natural form and flow.

Example: The British economy was greatly hit by the economic depression.

In the example above, you can see that the topic sentence is brief and clear. This sentence cannot have any other meaning than what it truly implies. If this is integrated in the essay or becomes the topic sentence in the paragraph, then it gives you a guide on how to pour in your thoughts and ideas into a concise statement. Further, the topic sentence is strong as it gives heavy stress on the words: hit and depression. These words evoke emotional responses from the readers and in return, will make the essay more powerful and emotionally uplifting.

In conclusion, topic sentences must be the key elements in your essay that will make your readers continue reading until the end. If you break the flow of constructing good topic sentences, your essay will probably be boring or something written just for the sake of sheer will power without interest.
