How To Install Gaskets In Your Car

There are certain items in your engine's framework that can be replaced when they go bad

, without having to replace the entire engine. One of these things are gaskets. You might have heard the term head gasket, but didn't pay much attention to it until now. A gasket is really the seal that goes in between two surfaces in the engine. The head gasket is the one that sits between the engine block and cylinder head. When it does not seal properly, there are leaks within the engine and most likely the car will not run any longer. Therefore, you know all about head gaskets because you are stuck on the road and the tow truck driver has taken a peak under the hood and found your problem.

When a person says they have blown a head gasket or the gaskets are shot, that means the seal is actually broken. When the seal is broken, that means that the compression in the engine, where the pistons fire, is not at the level it should be at. Your car will misfire and the engine output will be weak. The engine might run as it sits in the driveway, but it might sound funny and it will not run very well.

While it sounds like it would be an easy fix, because after all it is just a seal around a part, it is more complicated than that. Getting to the gaskets is the hard part because they are inside the engine parts and parts of the engine need to be taken out in order to get to them and replace them. And, you might not have the head gasket to worry about, but another one inside of the engine.

A mechanic is qualified to change out the gaskets, probably a lot better than you can if you have never done it before. If you have someone helping you who has done it before and who has a lot of the right tools, then it might be ok to try and do on your own, However, if you are not mechanically inclined and have never worked in a car engine before, you can probably do more harm than good for your car.

The gaskets will need to be replaced as soon as you have the problem diagnosed. The car will not run properly, if it can run at all, until the seals are fixed and the compression rate is back up with the pistons. If you are doing the repair yourself, you might even want to have a lift in the garage to handle the weight of the heavy engine parts so you do not have to worry about hurting your back or trying to get parts out of the way so you can work.

Many people try to repair the gaskets themselves because it can be a costly process to go to the auto repair shop and have it done. Depending on where you go exactly, the gaskets can be $400 to $1,000. It seems like you could do it for a lot less money since it is your time involved, but consider how much time it will take you before you start on the project.
