How To Pass The Train Driver Interview
The Train Driver Interview does not have to be a daunting process, providing that is you prepare effectively. Yes, any interview can be a nerve-wracking experience, but if you prepare in the right areas this will give the confidence you need to pass with flying colours. Within this article I have provided you with a number of important tips that will help you to prepare effectively. The structured interview may be carried out on the same day as the psychometric testing, so make sure you have prepared for it well in advance. The panel will normally consist of at least one Train Driver Manager and a representative from the Human Resources department. The Human Resources representative is present to ensure that the interview is carried out fairly and in conjunction with company policy and guidelines. Every candidate will be asked the same questions to ensure consistency and fairness.HOW TO PREPARE EFFECTIVELYDuring your preparation for the interview I would recommend that you concentrate on the following three key areas:- Interview technique; - Research; - Responding to the interview questions. Each of the above areas is equally important. I will now go into each one of them in detail:INTERVIEW TECHNIQUEInterview technique covers a number of different areas. The majority of candidates will pay it little, if any attention at all. Interview technique basically involves the following key areas:- Creating the right impression. When you walk into the interview room you should stand up tall, smile and be polite and courteous to the panel. Do not sit down in the interview chair until invited to do so.- Being presentable. During my time as an interviewer for a number of different jobs I have been amazed at the number of people who turn up inappropriately dressed. I have seen people turn up for interviews in jeans, t shirts and trainers! I strongly advise that you take the time to look smart and presentable. Remember you are applying to join an organisation that requires you to wear a uniform. If you dress smart and formal for the interview then you are far more likely to wear your uniform with pride.- Sitting in the chair. The interview could last for up to an hour, depending on the length of your responses to the questions. This is a long time to concentrate for. Whilst in the interview chair sit up right at all times and never slouch.- Motivation. Throughout the duration of the interview demonstrate a high level of motivation and enthusiasm. You do not want to come across as desperate, but conversely you must come across as highly motivated and determined to be successful. Always smile and be respectful of the interview panel.- Communication. When communicating with the interview panel look them in the eye. This shows a level of confidence. You should also communicate in a clear and concise manner where possible.- Asking questions. At the end of the interview you will be given the opportunity to ask questions. This is where some candidates let themselves down with silly or inappropriate questions that relate to leave or sick pay. It is quite acceptable to ask a couple of questions, however, keep them simple and relevant. Examples of good questions to ask are:Q. If I am successful, how long would it be before I start my training? Q. I have been looking into your company and I have been impressed with the 'meet the manager's' scheme that you operate for your customers. Has this been successful?- A final parting statement. Once the interview has finished and you have asked your questions, you may wish to finish off with a final statement. Your final statement should say something about your desire and passion for becoming a Trainee Train Driver. The following is a good example of a final statement:"I would like to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to be interviewed for the post today. Over the last few months I have been working hard to learn about the role and also about your company. If I am successful then I promise you that I will work hard to pass the tests and exams and I will be a loyal and professional employee of your team. Thank you."RESEARCHAs you can imagine, in the build up to the interview you will need to carry out plenty of research. Research that is, in relation to the role of a Trainee Train Driver and also the Train Operating Company that you are applying to join. Here is a list of the more important areas I recommend that you study:- The job description and person specification for the job that you are applying for.- Your application form and the responses that you provided to all of the questions.- The website of the Train operating Company you are applying to join. What is their customer service charter? Do they have a mission statement? What services do they provide? What is their geographical area? How many people work for them? Who is the person in charge? What stations do they operate out of? What trains do they operate? Do they operate any schemes in order to improve customer service? What are the future plans of the TOC?- Try to visit a train station that the TOC operates out of. Speak to some of the staff at the station and ask them questions about the role they perform. Try to find out as much as possible about the TOC you are applying for. If you get the opportunity, speak to a qualified Train Driver who works for the TOC. You may also decide to telephone the TOCs Human Resources department and ask if you can go along to find out a little bit more about their organisation and what they expect from their employees.By following the above crucial tips you will be giving yourself every chance of passing the Train Driver interview.
