Outsmart the ones that think they can slip inside your home on the second floor by getting motion sensors upstairs. 2. Lock in a monitoring service. Having an alarm without the monitoring service is like having a phone without voicemail. If youre around to take the call, great; if not, theres no way youre going to know what is happening. Get the monitoring service which can cover all the angles and doesnt force you into contracts that have a bunch of extras you do not need. Also, ask about its policies and capabilities when there are power issues.

3. Keep an eye on your property in its entirety. You cant call your home security plan complete unless you know what is happening in each corner of your property. This could mean that you need surveillance cameras, but it might also mean you should have a driveway alarm at your disposal, or something more advanced. 4. Get fire prevention and response procedures together. Fire safety is one of the things which many homeowners neglect when putting a home security plan together. What would you do if a fire broke out in the kitchen? Would you have a fire extinguisher handy to put it out? Would your smoke detectors pick up on a situation in some other wing of the house? These two issues are essential, as is the need for an escape plan. Practice how you would evacuate with your family, and where you would meet outside.

5. Practice street smarts at the front door. You know that you need street smarts if you are a New Yorker, but you cannot let them desert you when you get inside your home. Tell your family what to do in case there is a visitor you are not prepared for. The expertise of thieves has become rather impressive in this day and age. Remember that you might be up against some of the craftiest criminals around.
