The first thing a person should do is remain calm in spite of what is happening in the building. If a person is panicking in such a situation, then they will strike worry in others nearby causing the whole mass to join them in their panic charade. Though the same would be true if a person acts calm, then everyone will think more rationally.

Once a person's eyes are adjusted to the darkness, they'll be able to clearly see the emergency lights once they kick on, which should only take a few moments. The next step would be to follow the exit signs until safety is reached. There the group of people can decide the next plan of action.

That is the basic plan of action for a situation involving emergency lighting. Though further understanding can only assist a person even more, and help prepare them for every possibility. Besides the standard exit sign lighting, there are other types of lighting one should know about.

Exit signs are classified as escape route lighting; this is one of several different types. Those different types consist of: emergency escape lighting, standby lighting, open area lighting, and high risk area lighting. Emergency escape lighting provides light for people attempting to leave the current location. Standby lighting is technically not part of emergency standards. It is a type of lighting that turns on when the power is shut off, but the people in the building are able to continue what they were doing. Open area lighting, or anti-panic lighting, provides light to allow people to reach an area where an escape route can be found. High risk area lighting is used solely for people in possibly dangerous location. It provides light so that workers are able to properly terminate activity to that could have caused harm to the people in the vicinity.

With the knowledge above, any person would be able to understand what each type of light means and be able to navigate oneself, and others, to an area of safety.
