Sports are a fundamental part of life, they enable us to relax and enjoy living, a classic example of all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The very essence of how sports bring people from all over the world is also an amazing concept; this simple games have united millions world over to forget about everything else and focus on cheering and simply being happy. Sports however, aside from bringing joy and making life just a tad bit easy, can also be very educational. There are so many things that simply being involved in a sport can teach you. Things that you would never know or take seriously, if you were not part of the scene or the hype. To prove that this holds true we will take an example of baseball; the all-American game that brings millions of Americans together and still manages to instill some hard core values to each individual in the team and the millions of fans that it boasts of.
Baseball is a game played by two teams. Each team has nine innings and the point is that each team tries to score runs. The home team always bats second and the visiting team bats at the top of the inning. Baseball has a very humble history. It is said to originate from the very popular English game of rounders played in the nineteenth century. It was commonly referred to as town ball' or the base' or baseball'. The first game of baseball that was recorded was in 1846.It became a very big deal thereafter with several amateur teams being called to discuss the rules and so forth and many leagues being formed in support of the game. While baseball is such a tremendous and great game it still manages to be a tool through which to pass information almost overtaking the basic classroom in its effectiveness perhaps it is celebrated by thousands, millions at that.
Professional baseball players play a key role as role models to a lot of America's youths. This same youth is faced with so many problems, so many questions, so many decisions and it is amazing to see how being in the baseball scene is affecting them positively. For instance obesity affects almost half the population of Americans especially the youth, what with new technology and all that has relegated the ultimate importance of the outdoors and simple basic exercise. However, an American in the baseball scene is influenced by his or her favorite baseball star to keep fit and eat healthy. If my all time favorite baseball super star takes time to work out and eat healthy and looks like a million dollars while at it then what excuse do I have to sit at the couch like a potato all day doing nothing. With the millions of fans that it has one can only imagine a how healthy America will be in a few years time.
The issue of drugs is also quite rampant in the United States of America and especially among the youth. Drugs like cocaine and marijuana are almost too shockingly popular among the youth and a healthy lifestyle is becoming a thing of the past. However, for a youth in the baseball scene leading a healthy lifestyle becomes almost like a mantra. First of all there is the general influence of the baseball stars not to do drugs. Some anti-drugs organizations use these stars for their campaigns because they will no doubt reach their millions of fans and impact better than any other person would.
There are also slogans that are formed and given to the fans which contain very educative information. They educate about the use of drugs and the very awful effects they have on a person's mental, physical and emotional state. Effects of each particular drug are highlighted and the general use of these drugs is vehemently discouraged. It also strives to educate about the negative effects of steroids; how unnaturally stimulating your body can cause such drastic outcomes and cause health problems to a person. Personally, this is perhaps the greatest move ever made using a sport like baseball to discourage performance enhancers because this is a field where so many would be tempted to take them. When all this anti-drugs campaign is happening around you it is almost impossible to still become indifferent and become a drug user and thus America continues to strive in its success of becoming a drug free state.
This game has also helped educate about diseases; how they come about, how they can be prevented, how they can be treated and generally how a person can cope with different diseases and still live a positive energy full life. There have been instances of many a baseball superstar suffering from very severe ailments such as cancer and still pulling through from it. Cancer is a very stigmatized ailment in the United States of America. It is very feared yet it affects quite a handful of people whether directly or indirectly but when a person you look up to such as a baseball star is affected and still pulls through from it, it gives you a semblance of hope, of better days. It helps you not give up. A very good example of such an inspirational story is one Don Baylor. He is a hitting coach and a cancer survivor and he uses his experience to educate people and to give them hope that it is not the end of the world if one is affected by cancer(Chuck).
Being in a baseball scene as well educates about the importance of general team work. Watching a baseball game and seeing how successful a team becomes because of good team co-ordination instills a virtue in many a baseball fan. We have been taught to do things to better ourselves; a sort of man-eat-man society which is selfish and overwhelming to be in but the general values of sport and in precision baseball strive to teach different; being a part of a team and being united creates better result. Thus being in the baseball scene, one learns how to value the input of another person and how not to downplay group work especially when it comes to young people and school work. With people learning to work together as a team like their favorite baseball stars, America will boast of so much development and so much unity; something the world could use right now.
Baseball is educational in another way as well. Children as young as six years old are learning the business concept of investment because of their love for baseball. There are small baseball cards which many a fan of this all- American game loves to collect. The prices of this cards rocket each passing period especially with the rareness of each. Through trade, a child learns the value for money and how to sell a card for more than they bought it for. Therefore where the classroom is failing the baseball scene is clearly taking charge and instilling very important business concepts in a child's mind. America needs its young people thinking in a corporate sense because we need a more developed state to live in(Moroisette).
Baseball has been called education's kissing cousin because it has been incorporated into very many educational disciplines previously taught only in classrooms. For instance math and physics. Concepts such as trajection can be easily illustrated by how the ball behaves when it is hit in a baseball game. A player also needs to calculate the amount of time he needs to score a run and that is very well a mathematical concept. This way education has been made fun through sport. An example is the Indianapolis Indians when they introduced an initiative dabbed baseball in Education' which saw the incorporation of subjects like English, art, math, Social studies and so forth into America's favorite pass time. This initiative saw the incorporation of educational trivias in between the innings and improved the minds of so many students to see that education and school is not punishment but an important and fun part of life that should be celebrated and not tolerated.
Baseball also gives thousands of scholarships to hundreds of talented and young people throughout America. Thus many American youth in the baseball scene have benefited through and through from this sport.
All this go to show that baseball itself and being a part of it in whatever way can lead to acquisition of great and fundamental knowledge that can be useful to life's many challenges. It is thus so important to be part of a sport or be in support of one wherever you are(Omarea).
