How to New Bathroom Taps To Replace Your Old ones

Ok you're sick fed up with you're existing bathroom taps and fancy something new,or maybe your old taps have started leaking.Here is a quick guide on how to replace them

If replacing the current taps it will be necessary to switch the water off.Newer homes will have a water stop fitted on the pipe under the basin whereby you simply turn 90 degrees with a flathead screw driver.Many older homes will require the water feed to your home to be turned off.If you use a combi boiler your hot water feed may have a seperate water isolation valve you need to turn off.The fitting manual provided with the boiler should show you how to do this.Next put the taps on to remove any remaining water,although some may have a little left when they are removed.

Use a sink spanner ,crowsfoot spanner, adjustable spanner or a tap tool to undo the nut, which connects the supply pipes to the taps. Some water will come from the pipes, so have a sponge,rag at hand for this. Once the supply feed pipes have been removed use the same spanner to loosen the nut that is fixing the taps onto the bath/sink - the single taps will have to be stopped from turning during this stage of the process,it can be done on your own but a helper makes the job at this stage. Once the taps have been removed the holes in the sink bowl or bath need throroughly cleaned in preparation for the new taps.

Before fitting the new taps, compare the pipe connections on the old taps to the new taps. If the old taps have a longer shank(the threaded pipe that fits through the hole to connect to the feed pipe then a shank adapter is required so the new taps will fit. This can be purchased from ost diy stores and plumbing stores.

If the tails of the new taps are plastic then a plastic connector is required to prevent damage to the thread; one end of the connector fits on the plastic tail of the tap and the other end provides a connection to the existing supply pipes.If a monobloc is to be fitted then reducing couplers may be required. The reducing coupler allows the 10mm pipe of the monobloc to connect to the standard 15mm supply pipe.

Now to fit Your new taps, position the tap in the mounting hole in the bath/sink making sure that the washers are in place on top between the tap and the sink(important!) The next step is to install the tap in place with the backnut provided. When the tap is securely in place the feed pipes can be connected to the tails of the new taps.

The taps can either be connected with normal tap connectors or by using corrugated copper piping. The corrugated piping has the advantage that it can be bent to compensate for misalignment of the supply pipes to the taps. The corrugated pipes have a tap fitting at one end and compression fitting at the other. The corrugated pipes should be fitted to the tap ends first, tightening only by hand. The supply pipes can then be connected to the other end. Once they have been connected both ends can be tightened with a spanner.

When you've completed this process for each tap the water supply can be turned back on. Any new pipework should be checked for leaks. If any leaks occur they can mostly be stopped by simply tightening joins otherwise the system will have to be drained again and a closer and more thorough investigation should occur to find the source of the leak.Most water leaks are a case of simply tightening so there shouldn't be anthing you cannot handle yourself.Enjoy using your new taps.
