How to Play Bass For Beginners - 5 Adam Clayton Bass Lines You Should Line

This will do two things for you, it will give you some repertoire that you can play at rehearsals and jams - and it will also give you real world applications of common bass playing issues e.g. left and right hand co-ordination, fretboard familiarity, etc.

Adam Clayton of U2 is a great bass player for beginners to model as his bass lines are always supportive of the song and relatively simple.

Here are 5 Adam Clayton bass lines that you should learn. They are ordered from easiest to hardest.

With Or Without You

This is a great song for beginners to learn. It's only got 4 notes, so it's pretty easy for fretting hand. And the plucking hand has to deliver a constant 8th note pulse, so it's a good co-ordination exercise for the plucking hand.

This song was on U2's highly acclaimed The Joshua Tree album.

Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

This song was also on the Joshua Tree album (my favourite U2 album). It's another relatively easy song for bass guitar beginners. But as with most of these songs if you play the line authentically you will get a good lesson in one of the bass player's biggest jobs - delivering a repeating line over and over throughout a song.

New Year's Day

My favourite version of this tune is on the 'Under A Blood Red Sky' album, which was recorded live in America. This tune is again fairly simple for the fretting hand, and the plucking hand has to maintain a pretty constant 8th note rhythm at a reasonable tempo. So learning this song is two lessons for the price of one - you get to play a motif based bass line over and over, plus that motif will ensure that your plucking hand chops are worked on.

Sunday Bloody Sunday

Although my favourite version of this tune is on the Under a Blood Red Sky album, I'd suggest you listen to the original studio version, which was on an album called 'War.' Sunday Bloody Sunday is a good introduction to playing 16th note based lines - and both the recording and the playing of those 16th notes are much clearer and crisper on the 'War' album.

One

My favourite U2 tune, period. The bass line is pretty straightforward and shouldn't cause you too many problems.

Summary

I'm a great believer in learning songs as you learn how to play bass. It reinforces key aspects of what you should be learning - technique, rhythm and notes. And it also gives you something that you can measure your progress with. Mastering a sequential series of progressively harder songs is a great way to build up your bass playing abilities.
