How to Remove Skin Tags Yourself, Complete Information
There are many effective methods to remove skin tags yourself. While many people consider these little growths to be sources of embarrassment, they're actually quite common. It's estimated that approximately half of the population at some point in their life will develop skin tags. Most of the methods I will go over in this article for the removal of skin tags at home can be easily accomplished by the individual. Depending upon the location, you might need the help of someone else such as your spouse.
One point that should be noted is that skin tags are harmless benign growths. Occasionally they may become thrombosed. When this happens they will commonly change colors becoming purple or even black. This is usually not a reason for concern. However skin tags that have changed color or begin bleeding should be examined by your physician. Occasionally, but rarely this is an indication of a different type of condition. Your healthcare provider may want to have these tags biopsied.
There are many different common terms for skin tags. Common terms include, skin tabs, and barnacles. Occasionally they are mistaken for warts. Some of the medical terms are, acrochordon, cutaneous papilloma, soft fibroma and fibroepithelial polyp. Generally most people, including dermatologist and physicians, refer to them as skin tags.
The first method I will explain to remove a skin tag yourself, is one that's easy to accomplish. However there are two prerequisites. The first being, the skin tag needs to be large enough that you can easily grasp it. The second being, it will need to be in a place you can easily reach it with both hands. If it's in a location that's not easily reached with both hands, such as your armpit, you will need the assistance of another person.
For this first procedure you'll need one of the following. A very fine piece of string or strong thread. A fine piece of fishing line. Or a piece of hair from your head that's at least 5 inches long. Begin by taking the string, thread, fishing line or hair and make a loop. Place the loop directly over the skin tag, pulling it tight at the base of the tag. If you're using a hair, be careful not to pull so hard that it breaks. Next you should trim away the excess string, thread, fishing line or hair, so it's not noticeable. Leave the string in place for approximately 3 to 5 days. After that period of time the tag should have withered and fell off.
The second procedure to remove skin tags yourself involves the use of tea tree oil. Most pharmacies should have some tea tree oil for you to purchase. Begin by thoroughly cleaning the affected area with soap and water. Next, dry it off with a towel or simply let it dry in the air. Take a small cotton ball (100% cotton is best) and lightly dampen the cotton bowl with water. Put one or two drops only of tea tree oil onto the cotton ball. Using the cotton ball dab or rub the tea tree oil onto the skin tag. You will need to be certain the tea tree oil dries completely before covering the skin tag to ensure what you've just applied is not rubbed off. Repeat this procedure once or twice daily until the skin tag disappears.
The third procedure to remove skin tags yourself is snipping them off with sharp scissors. This method can cause a small amount of pain but typically very little. One thing you can do at home is take a ice cube and hold it against the skin tag for a minute or so to numb it. First you should sterilizers scissors with some rubbing alcohol. Next, pull the skin tag out away from the skin then snip the stalk at the thinnest part. A small amount of bleeding will occur, to control this, apply pressure for a few moments. Next, apply some antibiotic ointment to avoid infection. This method should not be used if the stalk of the skin tag is very thick.
Another method to successfully removed skin tags is using an over-the-counter liquid nitrogen product intended for wart removal. Follow the directions provided with the product the same as if your skin tag was a wart. Freezing your skin tags off with liquid nitrogen generally involves a small amount of pain. Also, a small scar might be left behind. If your skin tags are visible location you might not want to use this method.
If you decide that none of these methods are something you want to try to remove skin tags yourself. Your healthcare provider will have methods to quickly and easily remove them for you. However, this will come at a much higher cost than removal at home. If your skin tags are not causing pain or are not a source of embarrassment for you, simply leaving them is also an option.
