Plainly said, twitter is pretty much like an ordinary text service that you use on your cellphone. In fact, twitter uses 140 characters only to convey each status update or so called tweet. Now, unlike cellphones where you can choose who your recipients are, in twitter, once you post a tweet, it is broadcasted to all your followers.

Now the thing is with twitter is that without followers, you practically don't exist. So the first step that you should do is to look at some twitter profiles. For starters, you can try looking up friends, co-workers and classmates. By following people, you may be surprised at how many of them follow you back.

Unlike facebook where you have to be friends to follow each other, on twitter even if you aren't friends, you can follow anyone and at the same time they can follow you. That is the whole point of twitter, a bunch of people interested in looking at the status updates of anyone and everyone online.

Now you may be asking, how do people get hundreds of followers? The answer is simple, people tweet. Try it yourself, constantly post status updates or things of interest and a whole bunch of people will follow you. In a sense they are all waiting for what you will post next. Remember that the key to twitter's success is the ability to search posts easily.

Re-tweet is also another trick to get more followers on twitter. For example, if someone liked your tweet so much that they will post the exact same thing but use a code "RT @youraddress" then they are literally showing your tweet to all their followers. So if they have hundreds of followers, well just do the math and you'll get the point.
