How to present yourself to the Company you want to do Internship at

Dear Sir/Miss,

My name is Ryan and I am a British born Philosophy graduate. My aspirations are to work successfully in the marketing sector, whereby I get the opportunity to liaise with other like-minded people and prove my own abilities on a daily basis. My ultimate goal is to, in the distant future, open my own Events Management Company.

I have been searching extensively for paid work and internships regarding Events management and marketing focused positions and came across this exciting opportunity. My main goal at this point in time is to gain experience and see the world; the reason for why this opportunity is so appealing to me.

At this particular point in time I have just finished a degree at Cardiff University and am currently searching for a placement that allows me to demonstrate, and strengthen both my sales, advertising and writing capabilities. With that in mind, I am looking for experience in Events Management so that I may gain a comprehensive understanding of the business, coinciding with my future goals.

My experiences both at school and university have given me a strong grasp of the type of qualities that this job demands. In sales it is paramount that one is well equipped to communicate both confidently and effectively. Having been actively involved in amateur dramatics right through my school and university career I have been challenged on many levels, honing my communicative skills. I have been the lead singer of several musical groups and captained sports teams, so have developed the qualities essential for leadership.

It is integral to the success of any candidate that they are able to form relationships quickly (as the job centres on client and colleague communication). Having been an active member of many societies at university level and acted as a manager on behalf of a musical group whilst studying at university, my experience of forming bonds in pressurised situations is extensive. Moreover the position requires strong sales capabilities. Having worked in a Lettings Agency while the property market was at its lowest, my ability to sell was demonstrated (letting the most expensive and longest held property on the Agencies books). Equally having worked as part of the sales team while interning at Blackrock Investment Bank I gained a good understanding of sales in a professional manner. This taught me that bullish' sales was a negative quality and that a client must first and foremost like a person before there is trust and therefore a successful sale.

I additionally have first hand experience of Events Management having organised events both for University Societies and while interning at Blackrock. I spent a large proportion of my internship in the advertising team managing professional events for the oppening nights of funds. I therefore understand the procedure that one must go through in order to successfully achieve a rewarding event.

Although not essential, this placement does call upon candidates to have good writing skills. I have always been interested in writing, having composed published poetry and short stories from a very young age. Additionally being a song writer while in Cardiff has diversified this creativity. I read a myriad of different novelists/writers, from Capote, Hardy and Amis to Stephen King. As a writer the ability to compose focussed sentences that hold weight and relevance, are the key to a strong piece of work. This is a skill I believe I have developed from my study of Philosophy, and has led me into the freelance writing world.

Furthermore, my experience of writing within a corporate scenario is fairly substantial having interned with Blackrock. This placement boasted a plethora of writing opportunities from corporate communications to advertising and events management. During my time at Blackrock I was tasked with independent presentations, active membership in phone conferences with the New York office and coordination with the many departments (involving many different responsibilities). This gave a good understanding of the financial market and the skills needed to work professionally in high pressure scenarios.

Spending time at a local newspaper also gave me a clear awareness of the different styles of writing involved in newspaper article and broadsheet media. It has also familiarised me with the standards of editorial notation. I was involved with the final stage of proofreading articles before the editor judged them. In this way I learnt to be meticulous and accurate with my judgements, whilst developing humility in suggesting adjustments.

My computer knowledge is also comprehensive. While in Cardiff I was a musical producer for different artists, which has led to more opportunities having left. I therefore have experience with such softwares as Ableton, Cubase, Cubasis and Garage band. Equally I have filmed, edited and printed short films and so am particularly familiar with Pinnacle software. Coupled with these skills is my understanding of all Word writing softwares and the majority of Mac writing softwares; most likely a repercussion of a humanities degree.

The calibre of candidate this company is searching for seems to be one that is well-rounded and versatile. From my recreational interests of music, theatre, literature, poetry, television and film to my professional experiences I believe I cover most bases. I believe my desire to learn and my drive to improve are qualities that encapsulate appeal, and as well as motivating myself also motivate successful companies.

To clarify: I have just completed a 3 year BA honours degree course in Philosophy from Cardiff University and received a 2/1.

Now I'm looking for an Internship in China for the next summer.

I can provide my CV for your perusal if requested. Please let me know if you want me to explain anything further. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards
