Hulishan Fortress A Historically Acclaimed Attraction

On the coast, in close proximity to the Xiamen University and South Putuo Temple

, is the breathtaking Hulishan Fortress. At this historical place, visitors can also see the ancient wall of the city, an icon that has attracted many tourists from around the world. The fortress was built in 1894 during the Qing Dynasty era and it is thus become a place, prestigious to its country.

The attraction, recognized as a historical site, is a must see when you travel to China. It is known that the fortress was built for safety from enemy canons and the base of it was filled with a profusion of camphor tree sap, clay, liquid brown sugar, sand, and glutinous rice, due to its mixture being fire resistant. Travellers to the fortress will find many military buildings within its compound, including a castle.

The Hulishan Fortress sprawls across a land area of 13,000 square metres and it was the main fort among several others in the area at the time. At the fortress, visitors will be able to explore the many secret tunnels where soldiers took refuge during the war. There is to this date only one remaining canon, exhibited at the fortress. The cannon, together with its others were brought to the compound by the Germans and they are 13 meters long.

Exploring here will be a memorable excursion as travellers will be able to see the surrounding attractions such as the two Taiwanese Islands, known as Erdar and Dadan. These islands can be viewed via telescope at the fortress. The museum displays thousands of items of ancient weaponry, history and pictures.
