ISEE Test - Preparation Is The Key For Private School Admission
You've decided it's time for your child to receive the many advantages of attending a private school
. But there are many hurdles to clear. At many private schools, the majority of students applying aren't even accepted. One way to help ensure your child's acceptance is to assist them with doing well on the ISEE, or the Independent School Entrance Exam.
The ISEE is a comprehensive timed test, including an essay section, which many see schools use for admission purposes. There are many things you can do to help your child do better on the test. By being comfortable with what to expect, and applying effective test taking strategies, there's a good chance your student will be able to do well. Preparation is a process and should be started early as possible for maximum benefits.
The first step in preparation is to look over what is actually included. There are five sections: quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, mathematics achievement, and an essay. The exam is timed, and allows about two hours for completion, including 30 minutes for the essay portion. Practice tests are available online, and it's a good idea to look over the tests and have your child practice, so they can get a better idea of what to expect.
As with many tests, if your student can master some test-taking strategies they will have an advantage, even if they are not familiar with the specific material. For example, students who have a higher level of reading comprehension are able to tackle questions with unfamiliar words easier than students whose level of reading is lower.
You can work with your child and using an effective technique involving the process of elimination where any answer choices can be eliminated which the student knows are obviously wrong. This techniques works well with reading and verbal questions, as students are usually able to recognize some of the answers and can immediately rule out several of the incorrect ones.
There are also a variety of strategies available for the math section and essay writing section as well that can really make a difference in your child's success.
It's important to treat preparing for the ISEE as an ongoing project instead of cramming shortly before the test. By giving your child time to practice and master test taking strategies and content concepts, the student will gradually increase his or her ability to do well on the Exam.
