If You Need More Closet Space, It's Time To Get Creative
As I have gotten older, I have definitely collected more stuff
. Now, whenever I visit my parents' home, I envy the walk-in closet that they have always enjoyed. Over the years, it has been the perfect stash for Christmas gifts, food storage, and of course, clothing.
What's more, my father's office space is adjacent to the master bedroom, and my parents were able to use clever renovation tricks in order to install an additional closet to store coats, shoes, and office supplies. Wow! Wouldn't we all love to have that kind of storage space?
Well, I know I would. But my parents had the good fortune of having plenty of space to work with after all five of their children had moved out of the house. Because each of us are scattered around the southwestern United States, the house has no need to accommodate all of us at once.
Therefore, they literally chopped one of the guest bedrooms in half by putting up a wall in the middle and then removing part of the front wall, including the door.
It is by doing this that they were able to add space to the dining room to accommodate a buffet. They also created a small pantry--not to mention the office space and additional closet I mentioned earlier.
If you are craving more closet space, you could certainly take a cue from my parents' innovation. You may feel like you don't have enough room to construct more closet space, but creative design planning can not only provide you with the space you need, it may even increase the overall value of your home.
Many homes, particularly master bedrooms, have large wardrobes or armoires that look tremendously elegant but have a tendency to be awkward, particularly in a smaller room or a room that is already overcrowded with furniture. So, if you remove the wardrobe, you will have the space for a small closet which would store the same things.
Like my parents, you may have rooms that are going unused if your children are growing up and/or your interests are changing. Home offices, libraries, and playrooms can all be easily divided and then conjoined to adjacent rooms.
If you aren't much of a do-it-yourselfer then you will want to contact a local company that designs custom closets. They can help you to plot out the best space for a new closet to accommodate your storage needs.
Having plenty of extra storage space is always such a relief, especially as life goes on and you acquire more "stuff." Don't be afraid to get creative to find the best place to build a new closet in your home.
